An extraordinary event is happening in Katowice – ‘Beauty of Science’, an open-air photo exhibition. The event takes place from 1 to 13 August 2024 at Plac Kwiatowy by the Square Market and presents photos of the international Wiki Science Competition. The exhibition is organised on the occasion of the 19th Wikimania, an annual flagship conference dedicated to Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects.
The Beauty of Science is perfectly in line with the city’s character to present science in an interactive and inspiring way. These three events make up a harmonious whole, underlining therefore the significance of science and education in the contemporary world.
The exhibition presents selected works that document various and diverse aspects of science in four categories:
- Wildlife and Nature: Discover the beauty and mysteries of wildlife and breath-taking landscapes captured by talented photographers,
- Astronomy: Take a deep dive into space and see extraordinary images of our universe that will inspire you to explore the mysteries of what lies beyond our sky,
- People in Science: Meet people behind scientific discoveries – from lab researchers to field explorers. Their work and passion come to life in the photos,
- Microscopy Images: Discover the microscopic world on a much greater scale. The photos show incredible structure and beauty of elements unseen by the naked eye.
All photos from the exhibition and contest make it to the Wikimedia Commons and are available on free licences for use e.g. for educational purposes. The exhibition showcases stunning photos and may make you reflect on the role of science in our lives and inspire further discoveries. The exhibition will feature 40 photos, 10 per each category. Every photo will have a QR code that will redirect you to a certain photograph in Wikimedia Commons so that you can instantly save your favourite photos.
The exhibition is organised by Wikimedia Poland, in cooperation with the European City of Science 2024 and Wikimania 2024.
