On 14 May 2024, at 1.30 p.m., we invite you to the meeting, which will be held online on the MS Teams platform. The theme of the event is ‘Gnosticism in Hollywood: From the European Academia to American Popular Culture’.

On the wave of disappointment with the Enlightenment project, 20th-century thinkers, esotericists, artists and creators of popular culture increasingly referred to gnosticism. The lecture will be an introduction to this issue, discussing the concepts of three continental thinkers: Hans Jonas, Carl G. Jung and Eric Voegelin, and analysing the way in which Hollywood films continue these considerations.

The guest of the meeting will be Fryderyk Kwiatkowski, PhD – doctor of philosophy, graduate of the Faculty of Religion, Culture and Society of the University of Groningen (Netherlands) and the Institute of Philosophy of the Jagiellonian University. His interests focus on the reception of late antique esoteric traditions in Euro-American culture, primarily in the area of research on utopias and dystopias, as well as connections with popular culture. He has published his research in journals such as CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture, Journal of Religion and Film, and Gnosis: Journal of Gnostic Studies. His PhD dissertation is available on the website of the University of Groningen.

The organiser of the series of meetings is Agata Sowińska, PhD (classical philologist, Institute of Literary Studies, contact: agata.sowinska@us.edu.pl).

Scientific meetings within the series are conducted under the patronage of Prof. Adam Dziadek, Dean of the Faculty of Humanities.

The event is carried out as part of the European City of Science, in the City-Region-Academia stream.
