3,1415 are the first digits of π number, which is celebrated annually all around the world on 14 March, including at the University of Silesia. The date is not accidental; it refers to the American date format for 14 March: 3,14. The following digits of π are “15” which are of great importance this year.
First: this year we celebrate the 15th Pi Day,
Second: this year’s celebration will take place on 15 March 2021 (Monday). On 14 March (Sunday), we encourage you to have some rest and prepare for a joint celebration. On Monday, we invite you to the first activities starting at 8:00 AM.
Due to the pandemic, the 15th Pi Day will be held remotely.
Inaugural lecture
The opening is scheduled at 9:42 AM (3π); it will start with the inaugural lecture entitled „Wyrównywanie temperatur – przewodnictwo, promieniowanie i konwekcja” (Temperature equalization – conductivity, radiation and convection) by Jerzy Jarosz, PhD, who was awarded the “Popularizer of Science 2020” prize
Programme
The programme of the event consists of numerous popular science lectures, various workshops, and shows that will introduce many interesting issues in the field of mathematics, physics, chemistry, and materials science. Lectures and workshops will be held via the ZOOM platform; registration is required in order to actively participate in the activities and ask questions.
The event is organised by the Faculty of Science and Technology of the University of Silesia. The event will be held under the honourary patronage of Prof. Ryszard Koziołek, the Rector of the University of Silesia.
