Why the Faculty of Humanities of the University of Silesia
The degree programmes sound interesting, but do you want to know why it’s worth spending some time with us?
- Theory is part of the process, not the point. With us you learn by doing.
Are you allergic to classes the sole purpose of which is to learn boring definitions? We are too! Learning should be an adventure. In carrying out this task, we are assisted by a team of lecturers who, in addition to their impressive scientific achievements, possess passion, experience and open minds. During your studies you will also meet many practitioners.
- Student research groups are our specialty
By joining our team, you will receive an entry ticket to a plethora of student research groups, which for many become an integral part of student life. Take, for example, the Francofil(le)s Student Research Group. The group has organised many interesting projects, including scientific conferences, workshops, and events promoting French-speaking culture. And what do “insiders” have to say? Here are a few words from Kamila Gałgańska—one of the founders and Chair of the Francofil(le)s group:”I have very fond memories of every ‘meeting over baguette’ that we organised. We often would invite lecturers to these events and they would share their scientific interests with us, but not only that. During each meeting, an interesting discussion would developed. I also loved the preparations—a few hours before a meeting we would buy fresh baguettes, jams and cheeses, which we would arrange into elaborate cheeseboards to enjoy. And all this during the evening hours, when the faculty was deserted, which gave the impression of being in another dimension”.
- Unconventional solutions? That’s what we like!
At our faculty you will find, among other things, a one-way mirror, simultaneous interpretation booths, and even a cinema room. Another interesting option is to complete part of your studies and internships at universities and institutions abroad—both as part of the Erasmus+ programme and through the offers of various international agencies with which we closely cooperate.
- An atmosphere that drives you to action
The Faculty of Humanities is not just about lecture halls, classes, and exams. It is, above all, about its people and their energy. Here you will meet people who have similar passions to yours, and it is quite possible that with some of them you will establish relationships that go beyond the walls of the faculty.
- Students feel good with us
We put emphasis on ensuring that students feel comfortable with us and that the time we spent together is fruitful. We feel that together we achieve this goal pretty well. “Studying French has been my dream since I was 12, and I couldn’t have imagined that learning could turn into such a wonderful time, a space for development and meeting inspiring people. Barbara Taraszka-Drożdż, PhD and Paweł Golda, MA, among others, made me love French even more, something I didn’t think was possible”, says Kamila Gałgańska, a student of Romance Studies. “I highly recommend the University of Silesia in Katowice, especially the Faculty of Humanities, for the wonderful people, the atmosphere, and the opportunities it offers. I wouldn’t trade this faculty for any other, because I feel like this is where I belong”, she adds.
Pursuing your passion or building a professional career? With us, you don’t have to choose!
Imagine you are in a room with two doors in front of you—one with the word “passion” written on it, and the other with the word “career”. The choice is difficult because you don’t want to give up either? Great! We have a third door for you—the door to our faculty, where developing your passion goes hand in hand with building an interesting professional future.
The graduates of our faculty are the best proof of this.
“After completing my Bachelor’s degree, I worked, among others, as a guide at the Foundation for the Protection of the Industrial Heritage of Silesia in a branch of the Zinc Metallurgy Museum in Katowice. My commitment was quickly noticed and I was hired as a specialist in tourism promotion and management. Later I became the Museum Coordinator. I worked there for over three years. I gained a lot of experience and, in addition, made the Foundation a friendly place for students of Historical Tourism, as I was eager to recruited guides from this degree programme. I am particularly proud of this”, reveals Iga Rentel-Konopka, a graduate of Historical Tourism.
There are many more examples showing that combining passion and knowledge can result in great career prospects. Our graduates find employment in international companies, as well as in the creative and IT sectors, schools, and public institutions. They find professional fulfilment as translators and interpreters. They deal with communication, the study of culture, literature and language. The faculty also produces qualified specialists in speech therapy and neuro-speech therapy.
