The GEN-REYN project addresses the critical knowledge gap regarding Reynoutria invasions at the EU’s eastern border. Unlike Western Europe, Ukraine exhibits a high R. sachalinensis / R. japonica ratio, creating an active hybridization zone of the species with emergence of highly invasive fertile hybrids.
Aims & Methods: Collaborating with the Uni Silesia (Poland) and CABI (UK), Uni Chernivtsi team will integrate population genomics with a unique “Paired Living Lab”: two adjacent Chernivtsi cemeteries with contrasting management (mechanical vs. chemical). We will apply multi-level sequencing (Illumina amplicon / Illumina ddRAD / Nanopore targeted) and reproductive biology research to assess hybrid richness and constitution, as well as reproductive strategy shifts.
Significance & Outcomes: This “Research-to-Action” model provides the first genomic map of the East-West invasion corridor and develops management protocols for heritage sites. The project directly prepares the consortium for the Horizon Europe BIODIV-04 (2027) call, aligning Ukrainian biosecurity with EU standards.
