On 22 May 2023, the 5th edition of the ‘University of the Best’ programme was inaugurated. This year’s edition is attended by 17 students from primary and secondary schools and 15 tutors – researchers of the University of Silesia, people representing natural sciences, exact and technical sciences as well as humanities and social sciences.
The conference was opened by Katarzyna Trynda, PhD, Assoc. Prof., Vice-Rector for Education and Students. In addition, the event was attended by partner cities’ representatives – Grażyna Burek, Deputy Head of the Department of Education and Sport of the City of Katowice and Katarzyna Wanic, Head of the Department of Education of the City of Sosnowiec who also said a few word. Participants of the programme received official congratulatory letters, and after the official part of the event, an inaugural lecture ‘Wolałbym nie. Humanistyka i sprawczość’ [‘I’d rather not. Humanities and agency’] was delivered by Piotr Bogalecki, PhD, DLitt, Assoc. Prof. prof. – literary scholar, tutor, researcher and academic teacher at the University of Silesia. Then, young people, their parents and guardians had the opportunity to participate in workshops developing soft skills, which were prepared by Magdalena Piotrowska-Grot, PhD and Monika Sulik, PhD from the University of Silesia.
From June to November 2023, young people will work on individual research projects in cooperation with tutors. The results of these works will be presented at the November summarising conference.
The initiative is co-organised by the University of Silesia in Katowice, the City of Katowice and the City of Sosnowiec. The content coordinator of the programme is Magdalena Piotrowska-Grot, PhD from the Open University at the University of Silesia.
