On 10 October 2024, in celebration of Tree Day, an oak tree was planted on the grounds of the University of Silesia (near CINiBA). The newly planted tree commemorates the title of the European City of Science 2024 for Katowice and became the 15th tree in the ‘Avenue of Polish Trees’.

The ceremony was atended by Prof. Ryszard Koziołek – Rector of the University of Silesia, Prof. Mirosław Nakonieczny – initiator of the Avenue of Trees, Prof. Ewa Łupikasza, and Wojciech Kubica from the Katowice Forest District, who emphasised the significance of this symbolic gesture for the local community and future generations.

After the ceremony, participants had the opportunity to attend a popular science session titled ‘Information Encoded in Wood. Wood as a Source of Information about Civilisation and the Environment’ which took place in the Rectorate of the University of Silesia. During the meeting, the speakers discussed how wood can serve as a valuable source of information about the history of the environment and the development of civilisation.

The event was not only a tribute to nature but also an opportunity to highlight the scientific and educational values associated with environmental protection.
