New Media Art, Culture & Technology Research Centre

The establishment of the research centre is another step in strengthening the existing cooperation between the partners and is aimed at facilitating joint activities related to conducting research and organising scientific, artistic, educational and communication events. The primary goal is to conduct innovative interdisciplinary and cross-field research that combines humanistic reflection on new technologies with creative and design practice in this area. The establishment of the centre is a logical consequence of the previous scientific activities of researchers from three different institutions: University of Silesia in Katowice, Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Katowice and Silesian Museum.

We conduct research in two areas: humanities within the discipline of culture and religion studies, and arts within the discipline of art and conservation. This includes, in particular, research in the field of media theory and practice as well as media art: VR, AR, mixed reality, 3D animation, artificial intelligence (AI), interactive art and multimedia, activities in urban space, including video mapping, installations and multimedia concerts. Our interests also include issues related to data processing and building a multisensory media user experience, the theory of perception and cognition, the theory and development of artificial intelligence and the theory of knowledge, as well as the development of media of different generations and practices related to them in the historical and cultural context. Of particular importance to the centre is to research, develop and promote media art, including curatorial activities within the Silesian Museum and beyond.
