Week #11: Numbers Week
Date: 11–17 March 2024
- Curator: Anna Glenszczyk, PhD (University of Silesia in Katowice)
- Producer: Paulina Świtała (University of Silesia in Katowice)
Description of the week
Week #11 of 50 Weeks in the City of Science is Numbers Week. The event is part of the European City of Science programme, which will last throughout 2024.
Numbers have accompanied mankind for thousands of years, and even those who had the greatest problems with mathematics at school cannot escape from them in everyday life. The aim of the week is to show the ubiquity and usefulness of numbers, i.e., to popularise exact sciences by identifying the areas of everyday life in which mathematics, physics, chemistry and computer science are used. During the week’s events, research and issues currently being examined by scientists from Silesian universities will be presented.
Younger participants will be primarily targeted at activities that allow them to enjoy the use of exact sciences, such as simple math competitions, an IT field mini-game, building robots from LEGO bricks with basics of programming, and chemical shows.
High school students will be able to learn more advanced issues regarding the use of databases or the use of 3D printing in aviation and astronautics.
Adults and older people will be able to take part in classes covering computer image processing and lectures on financial issues.
The programme might be changed!
Weekly schedule
- 10.00 a.m. – 6.00 p.m. – AI-generated images exhibition (Scientific Information Centre and Academic Library, ul. Bankowa 11a, Katowice, main hall)
It is not easy for artificial intelligence to automatically generate works of art with a significant aesthetic sense because the concept of aesthetics is subjective and difficult to measure. people proposed some aesthetic measurement methods to guide the work of such algorithms that should achieve a certain goal, such as individual/agent-based methods and pixel-based methods. The results of these artistic and IT experiments can be seen at the exhibition.
The event is available for people of all ages. No registration.
- 4.30–6.30 p.m. – We count (on) mathematics. How to become an active and creative teacher – Workshops for teachers (Kato Science Corner, ul. Młyńska 1, Katowice)
Is teaching math and science easy? During teaching workshops for mathematics teachers, we will present several effective work methods, thanks to which everyone will be able to improve their work.
The event will be held by Łukasz Dawidowski, PhD; Joanna Samsel-Opalla, PhD, Assoc. Prof.; Natalia Cieślar, PhD; Sylwia Kania, PhD and Anna Szczerba-Zubek, PhD, Assoc. Prof. The meeting will feature: Sabina Celder-Dudek, MSc (Primary School No. 10 in Katowice), Katarzyna Trajdos, MSc (High School No. 4 in Katowice), Michał Rał, MSc (High School No. 8 in Katowice), Bożena Koprowska, MSc (School complex No. 1 in Katowice), Małgorzata Bochenek, MSc (School complex No. 1 in Katowice).

- 5.00–6.30 p.m. – From rags to riches, or why ‘nothing’ has value – discussion about cryptocurrencies (Municipal Business Incubator Rawa.Ink, ul. Teatralna 17A, Katowice)
Cryptocurrencies generate at least as much admiration as doubt. They combine mathematical methods with economics in an amazing way, creating a safe solution for the modern, increasingly digitalised world. Unfortunately, just as all that glitters is not gold, not all technologies offer the same solutions and possibilities. During the meeting, we will confront two perspectives: digital technologies and economics, and we will reflect on value itself.
The discussion will be held by Przemysław Kudłacik, PhD Eng. – an employee of the USil Institute of Computer Science. The event will feature Piotr Dąbrowski, PhD – an employee of the Department of Banking and Financial Markets at the Faculty of Finance of the University of Economics in Katowice.
The event is addressed to entrepreneurs and people interested in the socio-economic environment. Limit: 35 people.
Registration for the event is required via the form.
- 10.00 a.m. – 12.30 p.m. – Man in the spotlight of cybercriminals – workshops (spinPLACE, ul. Bankowa 5, Katowice, Conference room A.09, ground floor)
We can no longer imagine life without the benefits of the Internet and mobile apps. However, in order not to fall victim to fraudsters, hackers and not to share your data with anyone, the most important thing is to be aware of the threats while surfing the Internet. Would you like to know, for example, what will happen after opening an infected attachment and how to gain access to the email box?
It is always worth relying on the knowledge and experience of cybersecurity specialists, which is why we invite you to the workshop.
We will discuss the topic of online security and most popular types of fraud. We will show many examples so you can see how a cybercriminal tracks everything you type on your keyboard and more. We will show how easily fraudsters can impersonate someone and how a malicious application can take over our SMS. We will try to answer the questions: How to identify your interlocutor on the Internet? Is artificial intelligence a friend or a new threat on the Internet? How to check whether a payment reminder comes from a reliable source?
Łukasz Rinkowski – Team Manager in the Anti-Fraud Office at PKO Bank Polski. For almost 13 years he has been involved in the field of counteracting internal fraud, economic crimes and transaction fraud. Co-creator of solutions that reduce the risk of fraud. Participant of numerous trainings and conferences.
Paweł Olszar – Speaker at various conferences and trainings, e.g. TAPT or Secure. Over 25 years he has been associated with cybersecurity issues. For 5 years he has been an expert in the Cybersecurity Architecture and Services Office at PKO Bank Polski.
The event is addressed to 7-8 grade students, high school students and university students.

Three, two, one… go! The humanism of sports is written in numbers. Dynamic and static, motion and stillness in units of start and stop time.
Countdown of the boxer stunned by the punch and knockout. The law of numbers is a record of: The jumper’s BMI, the athlete’s weight, and the dimensions of the kayak or bicycle. The fight for another goal, one more meter, a successful hit determines the content of the digital board in the stadium. Success, defeat, draw or walkover will result in a change of place in the table.
The sports training process is a multidimensional set of numbers. The training unit, micro and macrocycle, along with their monitoring and diagnostics are described digitally. Sports analyses are numerical in relation to all processed values and parameters. Even those who count on luck, cannot be afraid when betting on numbers. Every analyst, anyone who works and invests in sports, knows how much you can gain and lose from digital recording.
The number π has a special place as it is one of the pillars of sport. Most team games cannot be played without it. How else can we define the formula for a ball, sphere and puck, or draw circles on the playing field? Rims and gears, the cross-section of the rod, steering wheel or bowling pin are also calculated using π. Is it a coincidence that the most important symbol of world sport is based on the value of π?
The Olympic Rings, reflecting the continents of the Earth, must be round because the world is round thanks to Copernicus! Lecturers of the Academy of Physical Education in Katowice will tell you a few words about it.
