Professor of comparative literature and literary theory at the University of Utrecht, researcher of Sinology, Dutch Studies, American Studies, the Era of Western European Modernism and Postmodernism. Member of the Academia Europaea, President of the Dutch Association for General Literary Studies (1981–1986), and President of the International Comparative Literature Association (ICLA, 1985–1988). Contributor to the research centres in Brazil, China and India, and diplomat at the Dutch Embassy in Beijing (1961–1968).
