Poet, translator, critic and literary theorist. Co-founder of the Workers’ Defense Committee, and literary director of Teatr Ósmego Dnia (1964–1969). Academic at the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań, professor at Harvard University (from 1981), co-editor of “Zeszyty Literackie” (“Literary Textbooks”, from 1983), editor-in-chief of “The Polish Review” (New York), the author of numerous poetry and translation volumes, “Poeta pamięta” anthology and Miłość jest wszystkim co istnieje anthology. He received an honorary doctorate degree from Curry College, Milton (Massachusetts, 1982).
