Language historian, researcher of onomastics and historical dialectology. Professor at the Vilnius University, and Jan Kazimierz University of Lviv, he co-organised Slavic and Polish studies at Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń and at the University of Wrocław. Member of the Polish Academy of Arts and Sciences (from 1939), a regular member of the Polish Academy of Sciences (from 1956). During the occupation of Poland, he was involved in secret university teaching in Lviv. From 1939, he edited the “Rozprawy z Onomastyki Słowiańskiej” series and several periodicals and dictionaries (e.g.: with S. Jodłowski, he was a co-author of “An orthographic dictionary and the rules of Polish spelling”). He was an editor of many relics of Old Polish literature (including the Saint Florian Psalter and “Krótka rozprawa między trzema osobami…” by Mikołaj Rej).
