The University of Silesia in Katowice was ranked seventh among research institutions in Poland (fifth among Polish universities) in the Nature Index ranking of the publishing activity of scientists in the most prestigious global natural science journals.

Nature Index gathers data from 82 most important journals in the world, including “Nature”, “Science” and “Physical Review A”. The list provides knowledge about the most recent results of highest level research conducted by scientists around the world. It also informs about cooperation between researchers at the institutional, domestic and regional level.

The ranking contains not only the number of articles published in selected journals, co-authored by representatives of particular research institutions, but also the fractional count (FC) index, which takes into account e.g. the number of institutions jointly represented by all co-authors of a specific article. The data cover the period from 1 August 2018 to 31 July 2019.

According to FC index of the Nature Index database, the University of Silesia was ranked seventh among Polish research centres, because our employees co-authored publications in the field of physical sciences, chemical sciences, as well as Earth and related environmental sciences. The index was also used for listing 10 domestic and foreign institutions that scientists from the University of Silesia cooperated with when they worked on the scientific publications included in the ranking. Among the foreign universities, there were research centres from China, Spain and Italy at the top of the list.

Detailed information about the method of choosing the journals on which Nature Index relies is available on the following website: www.natureindex.com.
