The University of Silesia in Katowice took 8th place among universities in the Perspektywy University Ranking 2025, maintaining its position from last year. This is proof of the stable and consistently developed scientific activity, quality of education and innovativeness of our University.
We are particularly proud of:
- 2nd place in the Innovation category among universities,
- 5th place in the Scientific Potential category among universities.
We also achieved high positions among universities in the following categories: Prestige, Educational Conditions, Scientific Effectiveness and Internationalisation.
The successes of our degree programmes
In this year’s ranking of degree programmes, our programmes were rated very highly among all academic universities in Poland. The highest ranked degree programmes offered by the University of Silesia are:
- Geology (4th place, advancement from 5th);
- Geography (5th place);
- Polish Studies (6th place);
- National and International Security (7th place);
- Journalism and Social Communication (7th place);
- foreign philologies (excluding English Studies) and Linguistics (7th place);
- Political Science (7th place);
- Theology (7th place).
Compared to 2024, the following degree programmes also saw progress:
- Biology (advancement of 9 places to 9th position);
- Biotechnology (advancement of 5 places to 7th position);
- Physics (advancement of 3 places to 7th position);
- Environmental Protection (advancement of 2 places to 9th position);
- Tourism (advancement of 2 places to 10th position).
Thanks to the above-mentioned advancements, all natural science degree programmes offered by the University of Silesia – i.e. Biology, Biotechnology, Geography, Geology and Environmental Protection – are in the top ten of the relevant rankings of degree programmes among academic universities in the country.
It is also worth emphasising that the University of Silesia took 1st place in the university category in the following technical degree programmes:
- Biomedical Engineering;
- Materials Engineering;
- Mechatronics.
Growing scientific potential
In the Scientific Potential category, the University of Silesia was ranked 5th among universities. This was due to very good results in regards to key indicators:
- Saturation of staff with people with the highest qualifications – advancement to 4th place among universities;
- Doctoral and postdoctoral qualifications – advancement to 4th place among universities;
- Evaluation of scientific activities – maintained 6th place among universities;
- Doctoral education in doctoral schools – 9th place among universities.
Leader in patents and protective rights
The University of Silesia has for another year in a row maintained its leading position among universities in terms of the number of patents and protective rights in Poland. What is more, our University has advanced by seven places in the classification of all academic universities – from 13th to 6th position, equalling in this respect the best technical universities in the country!
Additionally, we moved up from 5th to 4th place among universities in the Patents and Protective Rights Abroad index.
Increasing scientific effectiveness
The University of Silesia noted advancements among universities in the Scientific Effectiveness category in the following areas:
- Effectiveness of obtaining financial resources for research – from 10th to 8th place,
- Funds obtained from the EU framework programmes for research and innovation – advancement from 10th to 7th place.
Internationalisation and staff exchange
The University of Silesia was ranked 1st in Poland ex aequo in terms of staff exchange in the internationalisation category among universities, which proves our growing recognition and international cooperation.
High quality of education
In the category of Educational Conditions we were ranked 8th among universities. In particular, it is worth highlighting the increase in the availability of highly qualified staff – currently 4th place (up from 6th place last year and 9th in 2023).
