Historia powstania Instytutu Filozofii by\u0142a \u015bci\u015ble zwi\u0105zana z histori\u0105 ca\u0142ego Uniwersytetu \u015al\u0105skiego w Katowicach. Filozofia, jako przedmiot nauczania stanowi\u0142a istotny element kszta\u0142cenia humanistycznego niemal\u017ce od pocz\u0105tku istnienia Uniwersytetu.<\/p>\n

W utworzonym 1 pa\u017adziernika 1973 roku Wydziale Nauk Spo\u0142ecznych \u2013 na bazie Mi\u0119dzywydzia\u0142owego Instytutu Nauk Spo\u0142ecznych \u2013 powsta\u0142 zrazu Instytut Filozofii, Socjologii i Nauk Politycznych. Dwa lata p\u00f3\u017aniej (1975) w miejsce ww. Instytutu powsta\u0142y dwie oddzielne jednostki organizacyjne: Instytut Filozofii i Socjologii oraz Instytut Nauk Politycznych. A ju\u017c w nast\u0119pnym roku (1976), na mocy zarz\u0105dzenia Ministerstwa Szkolnictwa Wy\u017cszego i Techniki \u2013 wy\u0142oni\u0142a si\u0119 nowa samodzielna jednostka organizacyjna \u2013 jak\u0105 sta\u0142 si\u0119 Instytut Filozofii.<\/p>\n

Instytut Filozofii w swojej strukturze wewn\u0119trznej, na pocz\u0105tku swego istnienia, obejmowa\u0142 cztery zak\u0142ady naukowo-dydaktyczne: Zak\u0142ad Historii Filozofii (prowadzony przez doc. dr hab. Czes\u0142awa G\u0142ombika), Zak\u0142ad Filozofii Marksistowskiej (kierowany przez doc. dr hab. Kazimierza \u015al\u0119czk\u0119), Zak\u0142ad Filozofii Techniki (prowadzony przez doc. dr hab. J\u00f3zefa Ba\u0144k\u0119) oraz Zak\u0142ad Etyki (podleg\u0142y doc. dr Alicji Gli\u0144skiej). Dyrektorem Instytutu zosta\u0142 doc. dr hab. J\u00f3zef Ba\u0144ka (kt\u00f3ry pe\u0142ni\u0142 t\u0119 funkcj\u0119 a\u017c do 1999 roku).<\/p>\n

Wa\u017cnym wydarzeniem w dziejach Instytutu by\u0142o uruchomienie studi\u00f3w dziennych z filozofii. Rada Wydzia\u0142u 6 stycznia 1987 roku przyj\u0119\u0142a jednog\u0142o\u015bnie wniosek prof. dr hab. J\u00f3zefa Ba\u0144ki o powo\u0142aniu nowego kierunku studi\u00f3w. W tym samym roku Wydzia\u0142 otrzyma\u0142 uprawnienia do nadawania stopni naukowych doktora i doktora habilitowanego nauk humanistycznych w zakresie filozofii.<\/p>\n

Instytut od pocz\u0105tku swojego istnienia organizowa\u0142 wyjazdowe konferencje naukowe dla pracownik\u00f3w, ale te\u017c dla student\u00f3w zrzeszonych w Kole Naukowym Filozof\u00f3w (kt\u00f3re to ko\u0142o zacz\u0119\u0142o swoj\u0105 dzia\u0142alno\u015b\u0107 ju\u017c w 1977 roku). Na konferencje zapraszano pracownik\u00f3w innych o\u015brodk\u00f3w uniwersyteckich, tak\u017ce zagranicznych.<\/p>\n

W okresie transformacji ustrojowej Instytut Filozofii mia\u0142 ju\u017c ugruntowan\u0105 pozycj\u0119 w Uniwersytecie \u015al\u0105skim. W tym czasie pe\u0142ni\u0142 nie tylko funkcj\u0119 us\u0142ugow\u0105 w dydaktyce wobec innych kierunk\u00f3w studi\u00f3w na Uniwersytecie \u015al\u0105skim, ale posiada\u0142 ju\u017c prawa kszta\u0142cenia w\u0142asnych student\u00f3w. W 1994 roku w Instytucie uruchomione zosta\u0142y tak\u017ce studia zaoczne w zakresie filozofii.<\/p>\n

Kadr\u0119 naukow\u0105 Instytutu tworzyli ludzie o r\u00f3\u017cnej formacji ideowej, wywodz\u0105cy si\u0119 z wielu o\u015brodk\u00f3w akademickich. Du\u017c\u0105 cz\u0119\u015b\u0107 kadry stanowili absolwenci Katolickiego Uniwersytetu Lubelskiego, Uniwersytetu Warszawskiego, Uniwersytetu Wroc\u0142awskiego, Uniwersytetu Jagiello\u0144skiego, UMCS-u, a tak\u017ce absolwenci naszego Uniwersytetu, reprezentuj\u0105cy m.in. takie dziedziny nauki, jak prawo, politologia, socjologia, matematyka, fizyka, polonistyka. Mo\u017cna wi\u0119c stwierdzi\u0107, \u017ce w Instytucie Filozofii w pocz\u0105tkach transformacji ustrojowej panowa\u0142 pluralizm ideowy i \u015bwiatopogl\u0105dowy.<\/p>\n

W 1995 roku zmieni\u0142a si\u0119 struktura Instytutu. W jego ramach zacz\u0119\u0142o funkcjonowa\u0107 siedem Zak\u0142ad\u00f3w: Antropologii Filozoficznej (kier. prof. dr hab. J. Ba\u0144ka), Historii Filozofii (kier. prof. dr hab. Cz. G\u0142ombik), Zak\u0142ad Etyki (kier. prof. dr hab. H. Promie\u0144ska), Zak\u0142ad Filozofii Systematycznej (kier. prof. dr hab. A. Szo\u0142tysek), Zak\u0142ad Logiki i Metodologii (p.o. kier. dr A. W\u00f3jcik), Zak\u0142ad Filozofii Spo\u0142ecznej (kier. prof. dr hab. K. \u015al\u0119czka) i Zak\u0142ad Filozofii Nauk Przyrodniczych (kier. prof. dr hab. W. Sztumski). Kolejna zmiana struktury Instytutu nast\u0105pi\u0142a w roku 1999. Awansowali: Andrzej Kiepas \u2013 tytu\u0142 profesora (2001), Andrzej Noras \u2013 zatwierdzenie habilitacji (2001), Barbara Szotek \u2013 zatwierdzenie habilitacji (2002), Piotr Skudrzyk \u2013 zatwierdzenie habilitacji (2002), Danuta \u015al\u0119czek-Czakon \u2013 zatwierdzenie habilitacji (2005), Dariusz Kubok \u2013 zatwierdzenie habilitacji (2005), Krzysztof Wieczorek \u2013 tytu\u0142 profesora (2005). By\u0142 to r\u00f3wnie\u017c okres kontynuacji realizowanych w Instytucie g\u0142\u00f3wnych kierunk\u00f3w badawczych oraz coraz wi\u0119kszej aktywno\u015bci kadry naukowej, zw\u0142aszcza w zakresie wsp\u00f3\u0142pracy mi\u0119dzynarodowej.<\/p>\n

W Instytucie Filozofii zacz\u0119\u0142y te\u017c dzia\u0142a\u0107 studia podyplomowe. W roku akademickim 2000\/2001 uruchomiono 3-semestralne Studia Podyplomowe z Filozofii dla nauczycieli z wykszta\u0142ceniem wy\u017cszym daj\u0105ce kwalifikacje do pracy w drugiej specjalno\u015bci. W roku akademickim 2002\/2003 zmieniono nazw\u0119 na Studia Podyplomowe z Filozofii i Etyki. Kierownikiem studi\u00f3w podyplomowych od samego pocz\u0105tku by\u0142 prof. Andrzej Noras. Zwie\u0144czeniem tego okresu dzia\u0142alno\u015bci Instytutu by\u0142 doktorat honoris causa<\/em> przyznany profesorowi Czes\u0142awowi G\u0142ombikowi. W roku 2005 \u00a0prof. zw. dr hab. Czes\u0142aw G\u0142ombik, kierownik Zak\u0142adu Historii Filozofii Nowo\u017cytnej i Wsp\u00f3\u0142czesnej w Instytucie Filozofii Wydzia\u0142u Nauk Spo\u0142ecznych U\u015a otrzyma\u0142 tytu\u0142 doktora honoris causa<\/em> Uniwersytetu Palackiego w O\u0142omu\u0144cu. Uroczysto\u015b\u0107 nadania tytu\u0142u odby\u0142a si\u0119 31 marca 2005 roku w O\u0142omu\u0144cu.<\/p>\n

Lata 2006-2010 to dokonuj\u0105ca si\u0119 w Instytucie zmiana pokoleniowa. Wielu wybitnych przedstawicieli naszego Instytutu przesz\u0142o w stan spoczynku: prof. J\u00f3zef Ba\u0144ka, prof. Czes\u0142aw G\u0142ombik, prof. Halina Promie\u0144ska, prof. Adolf Szo\u0142tysek, a kadr\u0119 naukow\u0105 zasili\u0142 kolejny doktor habilitowany (Tomasz Czakon). W 2007 z kolei tytu\u0142 profesora otrzyma\u0142 Bogdan Dembi\u0144ski. Oczywi\u015bcie, wp\u0142yn\u0119\u0142o to na organizacj\u0119 Instytutu \u2013 powsta\u0142y nowe Zak\u0142ady, zmieni\u0142o si\u0119 te\u017c kierownictwo ju\u017c istniej\u0105cych. Utworzono takie Zak\u0142ady, jak Zak\u0142ad Antropologii Filozoficznej i Filozofii Cywilizacji (kier. prof. dr hab. Andrzej Kiepas), Zak\u0142ad Filozofii w Polsce (kier. prof. U\u015a dr hab. Barbara Szotek), reaktywowano istniej\u0105cy w latach 90. Zak\u0142ad Filozofii Spo\u0142ecznej (kier. prof. dr hab. Kazimierz \u015al\u0119czka, nast\u0119pnie prof. U\u015a dr hab. Tomasz Czakon), a prof. U\u015a dr hab. Andrzej Noras obj\u0105\u0142 kierownictwo Zak\u0142adu Historii Filozofii Nowo\u017cytnej i Wsp\u00f3\u0142czesnej, natomiast dr hab. Danuta \u015al\u0119czek-Czakon zast\u0105pi\u0142a prof. Halina Promie\u0144sk\u0105 na stanowisku kierownika Zak\u0142adu Etyki. Niewielkie zmiany nast\u0105pi\u0142y tak\u017ce we w\u0142adzach Instytutu \u2013 w pa\u017adzierniku 2007 r. dr Mariola Su\u0142kowska zast\u0105pi\u0142a dr Bogus\u0142awa Szuberta na stanowisku zast\u0119pcy Dyrektora ds. Dydaktycznych (studia stacjonarne), a od pa\u017adziernika 2008 r. stanowisko zast\u0119pcy Dyrektora ds. Dydaktycznych (studia niestacjonarne) obj\u0105\u0142 prof. U\u015a dr hab. Dariusz Kubok.<\/p>\n

Pocz\u0105tek drugiej dekady XXI wieku by\u0142 w pewnym sensie wyj\u0105tkowy. Dokona\u0142a si\u0119 do\u015b\u0107 spektakularna zmiana, tym razem w obszarze dydaktyki. Instytut poszerzy\u0142 swoj\u0105 ofert\u0119 dydaktyczn\u0105 o nowe kierunki studi\u00f3w. Obok studi\u00f3w stricte<\/em> filozoficznych, kt\u00f3re dalej prowadzono, uruchomiono nowe kierunki: W 2012 uruchomiono doradztwo filozoficzne i coaching: studia stacjonarne i niestacjonarne I stopnia. W 2015 uruchomiono studia drugiego stopnia z tego kierunku. Uruchomienie tego kierunku doskonale wpisa\u0142o si\u0119 w potrzeby polskiego rynku edukacyjnego. Liczba student\u00f3w od kilku lat oscyluje w granicach kilkudziesi\u0119ciu os\u00f3b na jednym roczniku, co, zwa\u017cywszy na ni\u017c demograficzny, wydaje si\u0119 wielkim sukcesem. A fakt utrzymywania si\u0119 tego trendu, \u015bwiadczy tak\u017ce o tym, \u017ce to nie modny szyld przyci\u0105ga student\u00f3w, ale znakomicie poprowadzone studia. Opiek\u0119 merytoryczn\u0105 nad tym kierunkiem sprawuje od samego pocz\u0105tku dr Agnieszka Woszczyk. W 2015 roku uruchomione zosta\u0142y z kolei studia z kognitywistyki. Kierunek ten prowadzony jest jako studia mi\u0119dzyobszarowe \u0142\u0105cz\u0105cy nauki humanistyczne i przyrodnicze. Podejmowana problematyka \u0142\u0105czy zagadnienia z psychologii poznawczej, neurobiologii, filozofii umys\u0142u, sztucznej inteligencji, lingwistyki, psychologii spo\u0142ecznej. Kierunek tak\u017ce cieszy si\u0119 bardzo du\u017c\u0105 popularno\u015bci\u0105.<\/p>\n

Powo\u0142anie nowych kierunk\u00f3w studi\u00f3w wymog\u0142o zmiany w strukturze Instytutu. W Instytucie zacz\u0119\u0142y dzia\u0142a\u0107 nast\u0119puj\u0105ce zak\u0142ady: Zak\u0142ad Antropologii Filozoficznej i Kognitywistyki (kierownik \u2013 dr hab. Mariusz Wojewoda), Zak\u0142ad Etyki (kierownik \u2013 dr hab. Danuta \u015al\u0119czek-Czakon), Zak\u0142ad Filozofii Praktycznej i Coachingu (kierownik dr hab. Tomasz Czakon), Zak\u0142ad Filozofii w Polsce (kierownik \u2013 prof. Barbara Szotek), Zak\u0142ad Historii Filozofii Nowo\u017cytnej i Wsp\u00f3\u0142czesnej (kierownik \u2013 prof. Andrzej Noras), Zak\u0142ad Historii Filozofii Staro\u017cytnej i \u015aredniowiecznej (kierownik \u2013 prof. Bogdan Dembi\u0144ski), Zak\u0142ad Logiki i Metodologii (kierownik \u2013 prof. Wielkim wydarzeniem w tym czasie by\u0142o zorganizowanie wraz z Politechnik\u0105 \u015al\u0105sk\u0105, IX. Polskiego Zjazdu Filozoficznego. Zjazd odby\u0142 si\u0119 w dniach 17-21 wrze\u015bnia 2012 roku w Hotelu Go\u0142\u0119biewski w Wi\u015ble.<\/p>\n

Od pocz\u0105tku z Instytutem zwi\u0105zana by\u0142a redakcja czasopisma naukowego \u201eFolia Philosophica\u201d<\/a>. Jej pierwszy numer ukaza\u0142 si\u0119 w 1984 roku jako 14. tom serii Zeszyt\u00f3w Nauk Spo\u0142ecznych, wi\u0119c pocz\u0105tkowo czasopismo nie by\u0142o odr\u0119bnym periodykiem. Dopiero w 1993 roku sta\u0142o si\u0119 ono samodzielnym czasopismem, uzyskuj\u0105c ten nowy status wraz z 11. tomem. W latach 2011-2017 Instytut wyda\u0142 kolejnych 9 tom\u00f3w \u201eFolia Philosophica\u201d. Do 2015 roku redaktorem naczelnym \u201eFolii\u201d by\u0142 prof. Piotr \u0141aciak (stanowisko obj\u0105\u0142 w 2006 po wcze\u015bniejszym wieloletnim prowadzeniu tego pisma przez prof. J\u00f3zefa Ba\u0144k\u0119), nast\u0119pnie kierowanie czasopismem przej\u0105\u0142 prof. Dariusz Kubok. To ukazuj\u0105ce si\u0119 od wielu lat wydawnictwo ci\u0105g\u0142e Instytutu niezmiennie dba o zachowanie wysokiego poziomu merytorycznego. Pocz\u0105wszy od tomu 24, \u201eFolia Philosophica\u201d sta\u0142a si\u0119 w ca\u0142o\u015bci dost\u0119pna online<\/em> i posiada mi\u0119dzynarodow\u0105 redakcj\u0119 oraz rad\u0119 naukow\u0105. Od 35. tomu (2016) \u201eFolia Philosophica\u201d by\u0142a publikowana jako p\u00f3\u0142rocznik. Od 2018 roku wszystkie artyku\u0142y by\u0142y dost\u0119pne w otwartym dost\u0119pie.<\/p>\n

W 2012 roku zmieni\u0142y si\u0119 w\u0142adze Instytutu \u2013 mo\u017cna by rzec, \u017ce nast\u0105pi\u0142a kolejna zmiana pokoleniowa. Dyrektorem Instytutu zosta\u0142 dr hab. Dariusz Kubok, zast\u0119pc\u0105 dyrektora ds. naukowych pozosta\u0142 prof. Bogdan Dembi\u0144ski, natomiast stanowiska zast\u0119pc\u00f3w dyrektora ds. dydaktycznych obj\u0119\u0142y: dr Mariola Su\u0142kowska-Janowska (filozofia i kognitywistyka) i dr Agnieszka Woszczyk (doradztwo filozoficzne i coaching). W nast\u0119pnych wyborach, kt\u00f3re odby\u0142y si\u0119 w 2016 roku tak\u017ce nast\u0105pi\u0142y zmiany we w\u0142adzach Instytutu. Dr hab. Dariusz Kubok po raz kolejny zosta\u0142 wybrany na dyrektora Instytutu, na swoim stanowisku pozosta\u0142a tak\u017ce dr Agnieszka Woszczyk. Zmieni\u0142 si\u0119 natomiast zast\u0119pca dyrektora ds. naukowych \u2013 zosta\u0142 nim dr hab. Tomasz Kubalica oraz zast\u0119pca dyrektora ds. dydaktycznych na filozofii i kognitywistyce \u2013 stanowisko to obj\u0119\u0142a dr Magdalena Wo\u0142ek.<\/p>\n

W 2016 Instytut m\u00f3g\u0142 poszczyci\u0107 si\u0119 \u015bwietnie wykwalifikowan\u0105 kadr\u0105 naukow\u0105. W tym czasie pracowa\u0142o u nas ju\u017c 6 profesor\u00f3w: prof. dr hab. Andrzej Kiepas, prof. dr hab. Andrzej Noras, prof. dr hab. Piotr \u0141aciak, prof. dr hab. Bogdan Dembi\u0144ski, prof. dr hab. Krzysztof Wieczorek, prof. Barbara Szotek oraz 13 os\u00f3b z tytu\u0142em doktora habilitowanego.<\/p>\n

Rok 2016 wi\u0105\u017ce si\u0119 z jeszcze jednym, bardzo wa\u017cnym wydarzeniem, a mianowicie pracownik naszego Instytutu, prof. zw. dr hab. Andrzej Noras, zosta\u0142 doceniony przez ca\u0142\u0105 spo\u0142eczno\u015b\u0107 akademick\u0105 i obj\u0105\u0142 funkcj\u0119 prorektora ds. bada\u0144 naukowych.<\/p>\n

W 2018 roku Instytut dostosowa\u0142 si\u0119 do nowych reali\u00f3w wynikaj\u0105cych z wej\u015bcia w \u017cycie nowego prawa o szkolnictwie wy\u017cszym i nauce, kt\u00f3re wprowadzi\u0142o istotne zmiany organizacyjne i strukturalne na Uniwersytecie \u015al\u0105skim. Mimo tych przekszta\u0142ce\u0144 Instytut zachowa\u0142 swoj\u0105 dotychczasow\u0105 form\u0119, cho\u0107 od 1 pa\u017adziernika 2019 roku zmieni\u0142a si\u0119 jego przynale\u017cno\u015b\u0107 wydzia\u0142owa \u2013 opuszczaj\u0105c Wydzia\u0142 Nauk Spo\u0142ecznych, sta\u0142 si\u0119 cz\u0119\u015bci\u0105 Wydzia\u0142u Humanistycznego, co lepiej odpowiada jego profilowi dziedzinowemu. Dzi\u0119ki jednodyscyplinowemu charakterowi Instytutu jego sk\u0142ad osobowy pozosta\u0142 niemal niezmieniony \u2013 obecnie zatrudnia on 38 pracownik\u00f3w badawczo-dydaktycznych. Dotychczasowe Zak\u0142ady zosta\u0142y przekszta\u0142cone w Zespo\u0142y Badawcze, kt\u00f3re od 2020 roku dzia\u0142aj\u0105 w nowej formule.<\/p>\n

Obecnie Instytutem nadal kieruje prof. dr hab. Dariusz Kubok, wspierany przez dr. hab. Tomasza Kubalic\u0119, prof. U\u015a. Za prowadzenie kierunk\u00f3w studi\u00f3w \u2013 filozofia oraz inne powi\u0105zane specjalno\u015bci \u2013 odpowiada dr Mariola Su\u0142kowska-Janowska, prof. U\u015a, wspierana przez dr Agnieszk\u0119 Woszczyk, prof. U\u015a oraz dra Macieja Stanka. Instytut posiada ugruntowan\u0105 pozycj\u0119 naukow\u0105 zar\u00f3wno w Polsce, jak i w krajach s\u0105siednich, z kt\u00f3rymi realizuje wsp\u00f3lne projekty badawcze i programy naukowe.<\/p>\n

Najwi\u0119kszym wyzwaniem nadchodz\u0105cych lat b\u0119dzie ewaluacja dyscypliny w 2026 roku. Mamy nadziej\u0119, \u017ce ocena ta potwierdzi wysoki poziom naukowy Instytutu i umocni jego pozycj\u0119 w\u015br\u00f3d czo\u0142owych jednostek badawczych w kraju.<\/p>\n

History of the Institute of Philosophy<\/strong><\/p>\n

The history of the Institute of Philosophy has been closely connected with the history of the University of Silesia in Katowice. Philosophy, as a subject of instruction, has been an essential element of humanistic education almost since the university was established.<\/p>\n

The Faculty of Social Sciences was created on October 1, 1973 \u2013 based on the Interfaculty Institute of Social Sciences. The Institute of Philosophy, Sociology and Political Sciences was then established as its part. Two years later (1975), the institute was replaced by two separate organizational units: the Institute of Philosophy and Sociology, and the Institute of Political Science. Finally, in the following year (1976), by decision of the Ministry of Higher Education and Technology, the Institute of Philosophy was formed as new independent organizational unit.<\/p>\n

At the beginning, the Institute of Philosophy comprised four research and teaching departments: the Department of the History of Philosophy (headed by Czes\u0142aw G\u0142ombik, PhD, DLitt, Assoc. Prof.), the Department of Marxist Philosophy (headed by Kazimierz \u015al\u0119czka, PhD, DLitt, Assoc. Prof.), the Department of the Philosophy of Technology (headed by J\u00f3zef Ba\u0144ka, PhD, DLitt, Assoc. Prof.), and the Department of Ethics (headed by Alicja Gli\u0144ska, PhD, DLitt, Assoc. Prof.). The Director of the Institute was J\u00f3zef Ba\u0144ka, PhD, DLitt, Assoc. Prof., who held the position until 1999.<\/p>\n

An important event in the history of the Institute was the launch of full-time studies in philosophy. On January 6, 1987, the Faculty Council unanimously approved the proposal of J\u00f3zef Ba\u0144ka to establish a degree programme. In the same year, the Faculty received the authority to confer PhD and DLitt degrees in the humanities in the field of philosophy.<\/p>\n

From the beginning, the Institute organized off-site academic conferences for both staff and students affiliated with the Philosophers\u2019 Student Research Circle (established in 1977). These conferences also hosted participants from other academic centres, including from abroad.<\/p>\n

During the period of political transformation, the Institute of Philosophy had already established a solid position at the University of Silesia. At that time, it not only provided teaching services for other degree programmes at the University but also had the right to educate its own students. In 1994, part-time studies in philosophy were also introduced at the Institute.<\/p>\n

The academic staff of the Institute came from diverse ideological backgrounds and from many academic centres. A large part of the faculty were graduates of the Catholic University of Lublin, the University of Warsaw, the University of Wroc\u0142aw, the Jagiellonian University, Maria Curie-Sk\u0142odowska University, as well as graduates of the University of Silesia itself. They represented various fields, including law, political science, sociology, mathematics, physics, and Polish studies. Thus, it can be said that in the early years of the political transformation, the Institute of Philosophy boasted ideological and worldview pluralism.<\/p>\n

In 1995, the structure of the Institute changed. It began to consist of seven departments: Philosophical Anthropology (headed by Prof. J. Ba\u0144ka), History of Philosophy (headed by Prof. Cz. G\u0142ombik), Ethics (headed by Prof. H. Promie\u0144ska), Systematic Philosophy (headed by Prof. A. Szo\u0142tysek), Logic and Methodology (acting head A. W\u00f3jcik, PhD), Social Philosophy (headed by Prof. K. \u015al\u0119czka), and Philosophy of Natural Sciences (headed by Prof. W. Sztumski). Another structural change followed in 1999. \u00a0Additional units were established and the structure was then as follows: Department of Philosophical Anthropology (still headed by Prof. J. Ba\u0144ka), Department of Modern and Contemporary History of Philosophy (headed by Prof. Cz. G\u0142ombik), Department of Ancient and Medieval Philosophy (headed by B. Dembi\u0144ski, PhD), Department of Systematic Philosophy (headed by A. Szo\u0142tysek, PhD, DLitt, Assoc. Prof.), Department of Ethics (headed by Prof. H. Promie\u0144ska), Department of Philosophical Problems of Contemporary Civilization (headed by Prof. Andrzej Kiepas), Department of Natural Sciences (headed by Prof. W. Sztumski), and Department of Logic and Methodology (headed by Prof. Krzysztof Wieczorek).<\/p>\n

Between 2001 and 2005, many of the Institute\u2019s staff advanced in their academic careers: Andrzej Kiepas was awarded the title of Professor (2001), Andrzej Noras (2001), Barbara Szotek (2002), Piotr Skudrzyk (2002), Danuta \u015al\u0119czek-Czakon (2005), and Dariusz Kubok (2005) all were awarded DLitt degrees (habilitation), and finally Krzysztof Wieczorek was conferred the title of Professor in 2005. This was also a period of continuation of the Institute\u2019s main research directions, as well as growing international cooperation.<\/p>\n

Postgraduate studies were also launched at the Institute. In the academic year 2000\/2001, a three-semester Postgraduate Program in Philosophy for teachers with a university degree was introduced, granting qualifications for a second specialization. In 2002\/2003, the name was changed to Postgraduate Studies in Philosophy and Ethics. From the very beginning, the program was led by Prof. Andrzej Noras. A highlight of this period was the awarding of an honorary doctorate to Prof. Czes\u0142aw G\u0142ombik. In 2005, Prof. Czes\u0142aw G\u0142ombik, head of the Department of Modern and Contemporary History of Philosophy at the Institute of Philosophy, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Silesia, received the title of Doctor Honoris Causa from Palack\u00fd University in Olomouc. The ceremony took place on March 31, 2005.<\/p>\n

The years 2006\u20132010 marked a generational shift at the Institute. Many distinguished figures retired: Prof. J\u00f3zef Ba\u0144ka, Prof. Czes\u0142aw G\u0142ombik, Prof. Halina Promie\u0144ska, and Prof. Adolf Szo\u0142tysek. At the same time, a new member with a DLitt degree joined the staff (Tomasz Czakon). In 2007, Bogdan Dembi\u0144ski received the title of Professor. This led to changes in the organization: new departments were created, and authorities of existing ones shifted. Newly created departments included: Philosophical Anthropology and Philosophy of Civilization (headed by Prof. Andrzej Kiepas) and Philosophy in Poland (headed by Barbara Szotek, PhD, DLitt, Assoc. Prof.). The Department of Social Philosophy, existing in the 1990s, was reactivated (first headed by Prof. Kazimierz \u015al\u0119czka, later Prof. Tomasz Czakon). Prof. Andrzej Noras took over the Department of Modern and Contemporary History of Philosophy, while Danuta \u015al\u0119czek-Czakon, Phd, DLitt succeeded Prof. Halina Promie\u0144ska as head of the Department of Ethics. Changes also occurred in the authorities of the Institute: in October 2007, Mariola Su\u0142kowska, PhD replaced Bogus\u0142aw Szubert, PhD as Deputy Director for Teaching Affairs (full-time studies), and in October 2008 Dariusz Kubok, PhD, DLitt became Deputy Director for Teaching Affairs (part-time studies).<\/p>\n

The beginning of the second decade of the 21st century was quite exceptional. A rather spectacular change occurred, this time in teaching. The Institute expanded its educational offer with new degree programmes. In 2012, in addition to strictly philosophical ones, which continued to be taught, the Institute launched bachelor\u2019s degree programmes in Philosophical Counselling and Coaching (both full-time and part-time), followed in 2015 by master\u2019s degree programs in the same field. The launch of the programmes perfectly addressed the needs of the Polish educational market. For several years now, the number of students enrolled in the programmes has been fluctuating around a few dozen per year group, which, given the demographic decline, seems like a great success. The fact that this trend continues also demonstrates that it is not a fashionable label that attracts students, but rather the excellently conducted programme of study. Since its inception, it has been overseen by Agnieszka Woszczyk, PhD. In 2015, Cognitive Science programmes were launched as interdisciplinary studies combining the humanities and natural sciences. This field, linking cognitive psychology, neurobiology, philosophy of mind, artificial intelligence, linguistics, and social psychology, also enjoys great popularity.<\/p>\n

The creation of these new programmes required changes in the Institute\u2019s structure. New departments included: Philosophical Anthropology and Cognitive Science (headed by Mariusz Wojewoda, PhD, DLitt), Ethics (headed by Danuta \u015al\u0119czek-Czakon, PhD, DLitt), Practical Philosophy and Coaching (headed by Tomasz Czakon, PhD, DLitt), Philosophy in Poland (headed by Prof. Barbara Szotek), Modern and Contemporary History of Philosophy (headed by Prof. Andrzej Noras), Ancient and Medieval Philosophy (headed by Prof. Bogdan Dembi\u0144ski), and Logic and Methodology (headed by Prof. Krzysztof Wieczorek).<\/p>\n

A major event of this period was the organization, together with the Silesian University of Technology, of the 9th Polish Philosophical Congress, held 17\u201321 September 2012 at the Go\u0142\u0119biewski Hotel in Wis\u0142a.<\/p>\n

From the beginning, academic journal Folia Philosophica<\/em> has been associated with the Institute. Its first issue appeared in 1984 as volume 14 in the Social Sciences Papers<\/em> series, meaning it was not initially an independent periodical. In 1993, with its 11th volume, it became an autonomous journal. Between 2011 and 2017, the Institute published 9 more volumes. Until 2015, the editor-in-chief was Prof. Piotr \u0141aciak (who had succeeded Prof. J\u00f3zef Ba\u0144ka in 2006), followed by Prof. Dariusz Kubok. The periodical, published for many years by the Institute, has consistently maintained a high quality of content. Since volume 24, Folia Philosophica<\/em> has been fully available online, with international editorial and scientific boards. Since 2016 (volume 35), it has been published semi-annually, and since 2018 all articles have been open-access.<\/p>\n

In 2012, another generational change of the authorities of the Institute took place. Dariusz Kubok, PhD, DLitt became Director of the Institute, Prof. Bogdan Dembi\u0144ski remained Deputy Director for Research, and Mariola Su\u0142kowska-Janowska, PhD (philosophy and cognitive science) and Agnieszka Woszczyk, PhD (philosophical counselling and coaching) became Deputy Directors for Teaching Affairs. In 2016, in the next elections, Dariusz Kubok, PhD, DLitt was re-elected Director, Agnieszka Woszczyk, PhD remained in her role, while Tomasz Kubalica, PhD, DLitt became Deputy Director for Research, and Magdalena Wo\u0142ek , PhD Deputy Director for Teaching Affairs (philosophy and cognitive science).<\/p>\n

In 2016, the Institute boasted a highly-qualified staff. It employed six Professors (Andrzej Kiepas, Andrzej Noras, Piotr \u0141aciak, Bogdan Dembi\u0144ski, Krzysztof Wieczorek, and Barbara Szotek) as well as 13 Doctors of Letters.<\/p>\n

Another important event in 2016 was the appointment of Prof. Andrzej Noras as Vice-Rector for Research of the University of Silesia.<\/p>\n

In 2018, the Institute adapted to new regulations introduced by the Law on Higher Education and Science, which brought significant structural and organizational changes to the University of Silesia. Despite these reforms, the Institute retained its structure, although as of 1 October 2019 it moved from the Faculty of Social Sciences to the Faculty of Humanities, better reflecting its disciplinary profile. Thanks to its single-discipline character, its academic staff remained largely unchanged, employing 38 research and teaching staff members. The previous Departments were reorganized into Research Teams, operating under a new formula since 2020.<\/p>\n

Currently, the Institute continues to be led by Prof. Dariusz Kubok, supported by Tomasz Kubalica, PhD, DLitt, Assoc. Prof. The degree programmes in philosophy and related specializations are coordinated by Mariola Su\u0142kowska-Janowska PhD, Assoc. Prof., assisted by Agnieszka Woszczyk, PhD, DLitt, Assoc. Prof. and Maciej Stanek, PhD. The Institute holds a strong academic position both in Poland and abroad, conducting joint research projects and academic programs with partner institutions.<\/p>\n

The greatest challenge for the coming years will be the evaluation of the discipline in 2026. We hope that the assessment will confirm the Institute\u2019s high academic level and further strengthen its position among leading research centres in the country.<\/p>\n
