ABOUT US

The area of research in the field of physics carried out at the Institute of Physics spans from particle physics to astrophysics. In particular, conducted are studies such as::

  • theoretical physics of elementary particles and experimental nuclear physics; e.g. the Institute’s employees participated in significant international experiments: NA61/SHINE at CERN, T2K in Japan;
  • condensed matter physics: computer modeling of complex systems at the micro and nanoscale, including the study of the various (electromagnetic, optical, and mechanical) properties of nanosystems and thin films, both crystalline and amorphous solids used in the design of new-generation drugs. Dielectric spectroscopy investigations are conducted at both, isobaric and isothermal conditions over a wide range of pressures and temperatures;
  • biophysics and medical physics; significant participation of the Institute’s employees in developing new methods of therapy and diagnosis of cancer, using radiological techniques, non-ionizing radiation and advanced methods of molecular biophysics which will be effective and safe for the patient;
  • modelling and obtaining pharmacological substances with properties that ensure a significant improvement in the bioavailability and effectiveness of drugs, the creation of innovative amorphous drugs (poor solubility of the substance, which is the reason for the low bioavailability of drugs administered in solid form, i.e. in tablets, pellets, granules and capsules, is the biggest problem the modern pharmacy struggles with; given that the insoluble substance is not absorbed by the human body, patients are exposed to taking doses of such drugs which are several times higher in relation to the amount that works effectively on them; one of the leading effective methods leading to the said purpose is amorphization of the drug substance);
  • computer modelling of soft matter properties: from statistical physics and stochastic processes, through molecular dynamics and liquid kinetics in the presence of ultra-high pressures, to hemodynamics, in which researchers describe the patency of blood vessels;
  • physical aspects of quantum information processing methods, including interdisciplinary studies of the impact of real disturbances on the functioning of quantum computers and the effectiveness of selected elements of quantum information exchange protocols: quantum teleportation, cloning and key exchange.

The research is co-financed by, among others, the National Science Centre, the National Centre for Research and Development, the Ministry of Science and Higher Education and the Foundation for Polish Science, as part of prestigious projects, such as Maestro, Sonata, Opus, and Tango. Young researchers are laureates of the Prelude and Start scholarship competitions. The acquired funds allow not only to employ the most talented young scientists, but also to equip laboratories with the state-of-the-art instruments to ensure the possibility of conducting world-class research. Effectiveness, quality and recognition of research are reflected in numerous citations of studies published by the Institute’s employees in the most prestigious international journals.
