Her scholarly interests include linguistic pragmatics and discourse analysis. She is the author of many publications on (im)politeness and face, and cross-cultural communication. At present, her research and teaching focus on Critical Discourse Studies, and discourse and identity. Since the 2010s, her work has taken a more critical perspective and now it deals with the discursive representation of social reality, ideology and culture.
