Emilie Szwajnoch is an Assistant at the Institute of Political Science. In 2026, she received her PhD in political science. Her research currently focuses on selected aspects of China’s domestic politics (with a special interest in the Social Credit System) and of its international presence (including how China might export some of its domestically developed surveillance tools abroad and how it acts in selected UN institutions). Her empirical studies rely to a considerable extent on her linguistic background; they are often based on analyses of Chinese-language sources, including regulations, policy documents, or press releases.
Dr Szwajnoch served as the principal investigator in a PRELUDIUM grant (no. 2020/37/N/HS5/02910) and is a researcher in an OPUS grant (grant no. 2024/53/B/HS5/02879; carried out at the University of Łódź), both funded by the National Science Centre, Poland. In 2025, she was awarded the START scholarship by the Foundation for Polish Science for outstanding young researchers.
She publishes in leading international academic journals, including China Information, Journal of Contemporary China, and Big Data & Society. She completed two research internships at the Université du Québec à Montréal (Canada) for the Canada Research Chair in Digital Regulation at Work and in Life. She was also a visiting researcher at Leiden University (the Netherlands) and Queen’s University (Canada).
She has presented her research at international conferences, including at the University of Copenhagen (Denmark), Lille Catholic University (France), the University of Ljubljana (Slovenia), and the University of Central Lancashire (England), as well as in invited lectures at, among others, the University of Glasgow (Scotland), CEVRO University (Czech Republic), and the University of Montreal (Canada).
