The project VINCI Dive into Science – Interdisciplinary International Silesian Summer School.

Practical information

Each of the School participants will receive a scholarship of PLN 5,000. The scholarship is provided to cover the student’s living costs while staying at the University of Silesia (accommodation, food transport, etc.).

The scholarship should cover the travel cost (plane, train, bus tricked, etc.) from the country of origin to Katowice, Poland. The scholarship will be paid in the first week of the School to the bank account indicated by the participant.

The Katowice area is one of the most populated regions in Poland, you can find a variety of accommodation here. One can use standard booking websites such as booking.com, erasmusu.com, etc., to find housing.

Paragraph No. 4 of the participation agreement says that the student can receive a scholarship for one of two options:

  1. to the bank account indicated by the Participant in Appendix No. 1 to the agreement on participation, or
  2. in cash in a bank indicated by the Host institution, in accordance with Appendix No. 2 to the agreement on participation.

Find out where you will study

All the places students will need to trawel around are located in cities (Katowice, Sosnowiec, Chorzów) that have good networks of public transport including buses and trams.

Buses and trams
Timetables and ticket prices for public transport in Katowice, Sosnowiec, Chorzów and the other cities of the Upper Silesian Conurbation are available on the website of the transport company ZTM.

Long-distance buses
Both state and private companies that run long-distance buses in Poland are often referred to as ‘PKS’. In Katowice, such buses leave from the PKS station at Skargi Street 19, in the city centre. Bus connections from and to Katowice are available on the website of PKS Katowice. There are also many other, private companies that operate in the region and use various names, e.g. FlixBus, Bus Brothers, Matuszek. Smaller and bigger buses of such private companies are often colloquially referred to as ‘busy’ or ‘busiki’. In Katowice, they leave from various stops located in several points in the city centre (e.g. the PKS station in Skargi Street, Andrzeja Square behind the main train station).

Trains
The Polish State Railways use the abbreviation ‘PKP’. Timetables for trains are available on the website of PKP: https://rozklad-pkp.pl/en. You can buy tickets online through this website as well as at ticket offices at train stations (which only work, however, in bigger cities and towns) and from ticket machines at train stations. Train connections are run by several independent companies (Koleje Śląskie; PKP Intercity – EIP, EI, IC, TLK; Przewozy Regionalne – Regio).

Planes
The International Airport Katowice is located 30 km away from Katowice, in Pyrzowice. You can check available plane connections on the airport’s website: https://www.katowice-airport.com/en/for-passengers/flight-board-online. From the airport, you can reach the centre of Katowice by taking a bus run by the ZTM company from Pyrzowice Port Lotniczy to Katowice Dworzec (express line AP2 lub AP3). There are also some private buses covering the same route.
