The University of Silesia in Katowice will host prof. Zhendong Jin from The University of Iowa (USA) will deliver lectures and conduct online seminars on chemical synthesis. Scientists were dealing with the field represented by prof. Zhendong Jin has been awarded many Nobel Prizes over the 20th and 21st centuries, it has been awarded to nearly 20 researchers from around the world. Professor Zhendong Jin is a world-class scientist dealing with research at the interface between chemistry and biology, particularly the synthesis of complex chemical compounds of natural origin for medical applications. For ten years, he has been developing new generation anticancer drugs – against malignant tumors for which no effective pharmacotherapy exists so far. He and his team successfully developed an innovative drug development technology inspired by natural products. His team developed two very promising first-class anticancer pharmaceuticals. Prof. Zhendong Jin is an employee of the UI College of Pharmacy in Iowa City, USA. As part of the project entitled “Development of novel anticancer agents / Development of new anticancer drugs,” lectures are planned, which will take place in May and June 2021 from 4.00 p.m. (16.00) to 6.00 p.m. (18.00).

We will start on 17 May. We will use the Zoom platform.

Biography prof. Zhendong Jin

Prof. Zhendong Jin completed his undergraduate education in chemistry at the East China Normal University in Shanghai, China. Then he moved to the US and earned his PhD in organic synthesis under the guidance of Dr. Philip L. Fuchs from Purdue University in 1995. Supported by an NIH postdoctoral fellowship, he received postdoctoral training in Dr. K.C. Nicolaou’s laboratory at The Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla, California. He started his independent academic career in the College of Pharmacy at the University of Iowa in 1997 and currently is a professor in the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Experimental Therapeutics there.

Dr. Jin is an accomplished organic/medicinal chemist who has developed novel synthetic methods that are widely used in organic synthesis and drug development. The Lemieux-Johnson-Jin oxidation, a name reaction bearing his name, is just one illustration of his contribution to the field of organic synthesis. His most significant breakthrough discovery is in the study of medicinally important natural products. He is widely regarded as the world’s leading authority on two promising anticancer natural products OSW-1 and superstolide A. His groundbreaking work not only has solved the supply problems of these compounds, led the field in understanding their novel modes of mechanistic action, but more importantly, successfully advanced two potential first-in-class anticancer drug candidates to preclinical stages with limited funding in an academic setting. Because of his contribution to anticancer drug development, the American Cancer Society gave him a Junior Faculty Award. He won four Inventor Awards from the University of Iowa Research Foundation.
