Scholarships in doctoral studies

  1. In accordance with Article 285 of the Act of 3 July 2018. Provisions introducing the Law on Higher Education and Science (Journal of Laws from 2018, item 1669), participants in full-time doctoral programmes started before the academic year 2019/2020 may receive a doctoral scholarship as indicated in Article 200(1) of the Act of 27 July 2005. Law on Higher Education.
  2. The doctoral scholarship is awarded for 12 months.
  3. In the academic year 2019/2020 the amount of monthly doctoral scholarship for PhD students at the University of Silesia is PLN 1470.
  4. Doctoral scholarships received by PhD students who started their studies before the academic year 2019/2020 will continue to be exempt from personal income tax. The scholarships will also not be reduced by social security contributions.
  5. The detailed criteria for awarding a doctoral scholarship shall be determined by the boards of units providing doctoral programmes.
  6. If a PhD student receives a doctoral scholarship and completes studies earlier than that mentioned in the curriculum and receives an award for the dissertation, the funds shall be paid for the period remaining until the date of completion of the doctoral studies, as specified in the curriculum. The amount shall be calculated by multiplying the amount of the doctoral scholarship received per month by the number of months that the period of doctoral studies has been shortened, but not more than six months.
  7. If a PhD student is expelled from studies, the doctoral scholarship payment shall be stopped on the first day of the month following the month when the student was finally expelled.
  8. If a PhD student completes the studies earlier than that mentioned in the curriculum and does not receive an award for the dissertation, the doctoral scholarship payment shall be stopped on the first day of the month following the month when the resolution on the award of the PhD degree was adopted.

Increasing the value of scholarship from the pro-quality subsidy

  1. In accordance with Article 286 of the Act of 3 July 2018. Provisions introducing the Law on Higher Education and Science (Journal of Laws, item 1669), PhD students who are outstanding in their scientific and educational work may have the opportunity to receive a higher scholarship on the current basis.
  2. The entitlement to a higher doctoral scholarship shall be granted to no more than 30% of the best PhD students of each academic year. The fraction shall be rounded down to unity.
  3. Increasing the value of scholarship from the pro-quality subsidy shall be awarded for 12 months.
  4. Detailed rules for selecting PhD students entitled to a higher scholarship shall be determined by the boards of units providing doctoral programmes.
  5. If a PhD student is expelled from studies, doctoral scholarship payment shall be stopped on the first day of the month following the month when the student was finally expelled.
