Dr Karol Pyka from the Institute of Music at the University of Silesia has been awarded in the 1st edition of Warsaw Wind Ensemble Composition Contest 2020, organised by Warsaw Wind Music Association oraz Polskie Wydawnictwo Muzyczne (Polish Music Publishing House).

The task of the participants was to compose a musical piece for concert brass orchestra. The compositions were assessed by the jury in two categories: international and Polish. Awards for the winners included publication and first performance of the presented piece.

Dr Karol Pyka won the 3rd place in the Polish category. The composer presented a piece called “Zawrat”, inspired by the landscape of Polish High Tatra Mountains. His composition is a small ouverture for brass orchestra, with a changing mood, essentially illustrative music.
