Mariusz Kanturski, PhD, Assoc. Prof. from the USil Institute of Biology, Biotechnology and Environmental Protection has been appointed as a member of an international expert panel of the Research Council of Lithuania as part of the comparative expert assessment of the activities of scientific institutions in Lithuania (equivalent to the assessment in Poland).

The Research Council of Lithuania is an expert institution dealing with challenges of science development on the national level. Members of the Council are advisors to the Lithuanian parliament and government regarding research and trainings for scientists. Additionally, the Council deals with the implementation of financing research based on calls for proposals, administration of the most significant Lithuanian programmes for science development, assessment of research results, and representation of science in various European and international organisations.

The comparative expert assessment of research and development (R&D) activities of universities and research institutes is carried out by the Research Council of Lithuania. The expert assessment is carried out every 5 years, and its results are to allocate 70% of the basic public funds for R&D activities.

For the needs of expert assessment, institutions in Lithuania will be assessed based on three criteria: quality, economic and social impact, and development potential. As for the rest members, scientists from the Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Greece, Spain, Germany, Norway, Great Britain, and Italy were appointed.
