The University of Silesia inaugurates the 53rd academic year on Thursday, 1 October 2020 at 11:00. Programme of the event includes e.g.: ceremony of handing over the Rector’s insignia and opening speech of Prof. Ryszard Koziołek, Rector of the University of Silesia.
During the ceremony inaugurating the academic year 2020/2021, the newly admitted students and doctoral students of the University of Silesia will take the academic oath and receive their student record books. The Pro Scientia et Arte prize will also be awarded. It is intended to honour employees of the University of Silesia for outstanding scientific and artistic achievements. Every year, this important and prestigious distinction can be awarded to two individuals: one scholar representing the field of mathematical, natural and technical sciences – this year it will be Prof. Jan Kisiel from the Faculty of Science and Technology – and one researcher representing humanities and arts – this year the awarded person will be Prof. Ryszard Kaczmarek from the Faculty of Humanities, who will also give the opening lecture entitled “Memory or history? Dilemmas of research on the history of Upper Silesia”.
Ladies and Gentlemen,
Soon we will begin the new academic year 2020/2021. I would like to invite you all to the official inauguration, which will take place on 1 October 2020 in the lecture hall of the Faculty of Natural Sciences at the University of Silesia. I can allow myself to make this general invitation, although even our largest lecture hall can only hold a small part of our community of almost 25,000 people. Forced to maintain remote contact by the ongoing epidemic, we will try to turn it to our benefit and meet everyone of you individually and all of you together during the online transmission from the inauguration of the new academic year at the University of Silesia. I would like to thank the whole community of our University for their determination in maintaining the operation of our University in the ending year and strongly ask for your persistence and involvement in work in such unusual and difficult conditions that life has given us in the shadow of the epidemic. I believe that this upcoming year will bring it to an end and let us get back to work and stay together in the real campus of the University of Silesia.
I would like to wish you health, happiness and all the best in the new academic year 2020/2021.
With kindest regards,
Prof. Ryszard Koziołek
