The 78th meeting of the Ecological Thinking Club takes place on 12 October 2022 at 5.30 p.m.; the event Antropocen – odpowiedź systemu ziemskiego na działalność człowieka will cover the topic of the Anthropocene, the Earth’s system answer to human activity. The meeting takes place in Kinoteatr Rialto (ul. Św. Jana) in Katowice.
The guest of the meeting is Martin J. Head – a stratigrapher and professor of earth sciences collaborating with such institutions as Brock University, the University of Toronto in Canada, and Wolfson College Cambridge (England). Currently, the Vice-Chair of the International Subcommission on Quaternary Stratigraphy (SQS), having served as its Chair between 2012-2020. He is also the Co-Convener of the Working Group on the Middle–Upper Pleistocene, a voting member of the SQS Working Group on the Anthropocene and of the International Subcommission on Stratigraphic Classification, and an advisory board member of the INQUA Stratigraphy and Chronology Commission (SACCOM).
Prof. M.J. Head specialises in the analysis of marine remains of unicellular algae Dinoflagellate that have accumulated on the bottom of the oceans over millions of years. These microscopic fossils are used mostly for biostratigraphic and paleoecological research. The scientist is also a science communicator in Anthropocene as the phenomenon of a “rapid acceleration”. During his lectures, he skilfully combines aspects of humanities and exact sciences to prove that humanity entered a new geological period.
The event will be broadcast via the YouTube Channel and Facebook.
The meeting is organised by: the University of Silesia in Katowice and the Faculty of Natural Sciences.
The “Gazeta Uniwersytecka UŚ” has assumed media patronage over this event.
