Editors: OO

From 5 to 7 April (Friday-Saturday), an international conference ‘After-words/After-worlds. The Legacy of Jacques Derrida’ will be held at the University of Silesia in Katowice. The conference will be dedicated to the intellectual achievements of Jacques Derrida on the twentieth anniversary of his death and the twenty-seventh anniversary of the conferring him the title of an honorary doctor of our university.

The main topic of the proposed discussion are contemporary readings of deconstruction, particularly sensitive to its political and social dimensions. The eponymous ‘after-words’ and ‘after-worlds’ lead us to reflect on a possible future as an alternative to a world plagued by conflicts, climatic and environmental catastrophes, refugee crises and the tearing of the social fabric by the development and continuous growth of the global capitalism.

The conference will bring together outstanding scholars from all over the world who conduct research on Derrida’s philosophy. The invited guests include prof. Anne Berger (Université de Vincennes – Paris 8), prof. Vicki Kirby (University of New South Wales), prof. Nicholas Royle (University of Sussex) and prof. Jeremy Gilbert (University of East London).

The conference will be opened by Prof. Tadeusz Sławek.

The organising committee includes: Aleksander Kopka, PhD (Institute of Philosophy, University of Silesia), Michał Kisiel, PhD (Jan Długosz University of Częstochowa), Katarzyna Szopa, PhD, DLitt, (Institute of Literary Studies, University of Silesia) and Sebastian Śpiewak, PhD (Institute of Philosophy, University of Silesia).

We invite you to read the description and conditions of participation in the conference, and we encourange you to send applications.

The event is held under the honorary patronage of the Dean of the Faculty of Humanities of the University of Silesia in Katowice, Prof. Adam Dziadek.

The conference partner is the Centre français de recherche en sciences sociales.

The event is carried out under the City-Region-Academia stream as part of the celebration of the European City of Science Katowice 2024.
