Open scientific session ‘High North and Far South from European and Regional Perspectives’

The Centre for Polar Studies, the Polish Polar Consortium and the Polar Research Committee of the Polish Academy of Sciences are organising an open international scientific session ‘High North and Far South from European and Regional Perspectives’ under the patronage of the European Polar Board.

The event will take place on 24 April 2024 in the conference room of the Scientific Information Centre and Academic Library in Katowice (ul. Bankowa 11a).

The session will feature outstanding researchers presenting papers on leading European research directions and science policy regarding the polar regions and the results of the European project EU-PolarNet 2, in which the University of Silesia in Katowice is a partner. Scientists will also present papers on the key results of the latest Polish research and the development of monitoring changes in the Arctic and Antarctic environment at Polish polar stations.

Programme:

2.00–2.15 p.m. – Opening of the event

2.15–2.45 p.m. – European Polar Board – Profile and Role in the European Science (Renuka Badhe, European Polar Board, The Hague, Netherlands)

2.45–3.15 p.m. – The EU-PolarNet 2 Project – Overview and Crucial Results (Nicole Biebow, Alfred Wegener Institute, Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research, Bremerhaven, Germany)

3.15–3.45 p.m. Monitoring of Svalbard Cryosphere: Research Projects and Selected Results, (Michał Laska, University of Silesia in Katowice, Poland)

3.45–4.00 p.m. – coffee break

4.00–4.30 p.m. – Re-activation of the Polish A.B. Dobrowolski Station in East Antarctica: scientific prospects (Marek Lewandowski, Institute of Geophysics, Polish Academy of Sciences, Warsaw, Poland)

4.30–5.00 p.m. – Recent Development of the Arctowski Polish Antarctic Station
(Agnieszka Kruszewska, Institute of Biochemistry and Biophysics, Polish Academy of Sciences, Warsaw, Poland)

5.00–5.30 p.m. – The Polish oceanographic research in the Arctic – recent achievements (Jan Marcin Węsławski, Institute of Oceanology of the Polish Academy of Sciences, Sopot, Poland)

Participation in the event is free of charge.

On-site participation requires registration through the application form.

The session will be broadcast online on the YouTube channel of the University of Silesia in Katowice.

The event is carried out within the City-Region-Academia stream as part of the celebration of the European City of Science Katowice 2024.

The event is co-financed by the Silesian Voivodeship – Co-organiser of the European City of Science Katowice 2024.
