Editors: K.S

The debate entitled ‘Rivers in the Metropolis’ will take place on 11 July 2023 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Scientific Information Centre and Academic Library (CINiBA) (ul. Bankowa 11a).

The event will be a great opportunity to evaluate the challenges and environmental and social needs regarding rivers in the Metropolis GZM in light of the ecological catastrophe on the Oder river in 2022 and in the context of the EU’s Water Framework Directive and the EU Biodiversity Strategy for 2030.

Scientists from the Faculty of Natural Sciences of the University of Silesia will also be included among the speakers:

  • 11.05 a.m. – 11.20 a.m. – Prof. Andrzej Woźnica: “Po pierwsze jakość – relacja z badań terenowych oraz potrzeba rozwoju systemu monitoringu” [Quality first – an account of field research and the need to develop a monitoring system],
  • 11.30 a.m. – 11.40 a.m. – Prof. Piotr Skubała: „Sytuację przyrodniczą i możliwości działań «rewitalizacyjnych» dla rzek w Metropolii” [The natural situation and opportunities for “revitalisation” measures for rivers in the Metropolis].

The debate is one of a series of five debates in the regions along the Oder river with regional stakeholders. Conclusions and recommendations from the debates will be forwarded to, among others, regional governments, national authorities, and the European Commission.

Those wishing to participate in the event are invited to send an email to: is@metropoliagzm.pl by 5 July 2023.

The event is organised by the Metropolis GZM and the Eco-Development Foundation.
