‘Culture Shock. Normalizing Discomfort in Times of Change’ is the title of the meeting organised by the American Corner of the University of Silesia in Katowice. The event is carried out as part of the the European City of Science Katowice 2024 celebrations within the City-Region-Academia stream.

The meeting will be held on 13 March 2024 in the conference room of the Scientific Information Centre and Academic Library (CINiBA) (ul. Bankowa 11a, Katowice) at 10.00–11.30 a.m.

Through the meeting, participants will use storytelling and discussion to help demystify the concept of culture shock and learn how it can apply to more than just international travel. Moreover, they will talk about the process of adjusting and adapting to new environments and cultures in addition to learning how to cope with the discomfort that often arises in times of change.

René Henry – PhD student at the University of Silesia in Katowice and the guest of the meetings – will share personal, often embarrassing stories about language and cultural mishaps, illustrating her own experiences with culture shock and many emotions related to finding one’s place in a new environment.

The entrance is free.
