Ceremony of conferring the honorary doctorate degree to Prof. Marek Safjan

The ceremony of conferring the honorary doctorate degree of the University of Silesia to Prof. Marek Safjan will take place on Tuesday, 20 November at 12 p.m. (noon) in Lecture Hall 8 at the Faculty of Law and Administration of the University of Silesia in Katowice. The honorary degree was awarded by resolution of the Senate of the University of Silesia of 10 September 2024.

The supervisor in the process for awarding the honorary doctorate is Maksymilian Pazdan, PhD, DLitt, and the reviewers are Prof. Maciej Szpunar, Mirosław Wyrzykowski, PhD, DLitt, and Prof. Jerzy Zajadło.

Prof. Marek Safjan

Prof. Marek Safjan is an excellent lawyer and a civil, medical, European, and constitutional law authority. He was a lecturer at the University of Warsaw for many years, where he also served as a vice-rector. A judge from 1997 to currently and from 1998 to 2006 the President of the Polish Constitutional Tribunal. In 2009, he became a judge at the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU). He was awarded the Commander’s Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta. In 2012, he was awarded an honorary doctorate degree from the European University Institute in Florence. Prof. Safjan is the author of numerous scientific publications which have had a significant impact on the legal discourse in Poland and Europe. His extensive academic work, commitment to the community and dedication to judicial service testify to his extraordinary commitment to the promotion of the rule of law, democracy, and freedom.

Accompanying events – conference

On 21 and 22 November 2024, the Faculty of Law and Administration of the University of Silesia in Katowice will host the Meeting of Private International Law Departments, where Prof. Marek Safjan will take part in the introductory panel. This year’s edition will be carried out under the theme: ‘Impact of international court jurisprudence on private international law’.
