20th National Libraries Week

From 8 to 14 May 2023, we celebrate the national libraries week. Under the slogan ‘My, Your, Our – LIBRARY!’ institutions encourage participants to visit their walls, promote reading and the values ​​of the literary world, organise various events and meetings with interesting guests.

As part of the initiative, the Silesian Library in Katowice prepared numerous events, also with the participation of employees of the University of Silesia.

On Monday, 8 May 2023, the opening of the exhibition ‘Quiet Masterpieces. Bookbinding art from the collection of the Silesian Library’ – the presented objects are included in the group of old prints, i.e. objects published between 1501 and 1800. The exhibition has been prepared with the aim of presenting bookbinding as an artistic craft. The books presented at the exhibition are distinguished by the implementation of individual details. You can see gold embossing on the leather, colourful doubles with gilding in the inner parts of the binding, covers dressed with silk satin or marbled paper originating from Persia and Turkey. The curator of the exhibition is Agnieszka Biały, PhD in cooperation with students of the Institute of Culture Studies of the University of Silesia. The exhibition can be seen in the main hall of the library.

On Friday, 12 May 2023 at 1.00 p.m. in the Parnassos room there will be a meeting with Mikołaj Marcela, PhD – writer, lecturer at the University of Silesia, author of best-selling educational guides, specialist e.g. in the field of pop culture, horror literature, James Bond and zombies, co-coordinator and co-author of The Art of Writing degree programme at the University of Silesia. The meeting will be led by Zbigniew Kadłubek, PhD, DLitt, Associate Professor – director of the Silesian Library and employee of the University of Silesia.
