The Silesian Science Festival KATOWICE (ŚFN) was invited by the Marshal’s Office of the Silesian Voivodeship to act as the ambassador of our voivodeship during the Silesian Regional Week in the Polish Pavilion – the space representing our country during the World Exhibition Expo 2020, which takes place in Dubai. In the United Arab Emirates, employees of the University of Silesia will appear as ŚFN representatives.

The delegation will be attended by the rector of the university and the General Director of the ŚFN, Prof. Ryszard Koziołek, vice-rector for international and national cooperation Prof. Tomasz Pietrzykowski and scientists from the Faculty of Science and Technology of the University of Silesia. Jerzy Jarosz, PhD, Associate Proffesor from the Institute of Physics and dr hab. Małgorzata Karolus, PhD, DSc, Associate Proffesor and Izabela Matuła, MSc Eng. from the Institute of Materials Engineering will lead a series of workshops for children in Dubai.

Prof. Jerzy Jarosz will conduct construction classes entitled “Space Mice – Build and Launch Your Own Rocket”. Their participants will be able to build various types of rockets, saucers and flying objects (and then launch them with the help of various launchers), as well as their passengers, i.e. mice made of paper – the nice Space Mice. Classes will last 45 minutes and are intended for children at any age.

Among the proposals there are also workshops on “Renewable sources of electricity” and “Urbanisation and metropolisation of the region – building materials over the centuries”, which Prof. Małgorzata Karolus and Izabela Matuła, MSc Eng. will work under the joint title “Become an engineer with the University of Silesia”. Classes are addressed to children aged 5 to 12, will last 45 minutes and will cover various issues related to the history and development of construction and industry in the Silesian region. Workshop participants will build a selected device, vehicle or structure on their own –those more creative will be able to design the object on their own, prepare the appropriate elements and put together the model, and those less adept and younger will be able to use ready-made and previously prepared sets.

The Silesian Regional Week at the Polish Pavilion will last from 27 January to 3 February 2022.It will be an opportunity to show the world what is interesting and the best in our region. In addition to the exhibition in the Polish Pavilion in the so-called Temporary Exhibitions Zone, the Silesian Voivodeship has prepared many accompanying events. They will include performances by the Song and Dance Ensemble “Śląsk”, culinary shows led by Remigiusz Rączka, games, parades, and workshops for children organised by the Silesian Science Festival KATOWICE, theater performances and many attractions related to the main theme of the concept, i.e. Koniaków lace – crocheting shows and fashion, presentations or a live performance of a Polish street artist known around the world as Nespoon, who often uses lace motifs in her works.
