Special guests of the 5th Silesian Science Festival KATOWICE

The Silesian Science Festival KATOWICE is an opportunity to meet interesting people, not only from the world of science. During the 5th edition of the Festival, which will be held from 9 to 15 October 2021, partly on the Rawa boulevards and partly online, there will be plenty of inspiring guests from Poland and abroad. On Sunday (10 October) in Katowice you can meet, among others:

  • Michał Rusinek, PhD, DLitt – translator, literary scholar and writer, long-time secretary of the poet Wisława Szymborska;
  • Prof. Zbigniew Izdebski – pedagogue and sexologist, author of the book “Seksualność Polaków na początku XXI wieku” (Sexuality of Poles at the beginning of the 21st century);
  • Artur Andrus – cabaret artist and announcer;
  • Wojciech Orliński – journalist and writer, author of the biography of Stanisław Lem;
  • Arkady Paweł Fiedler – the grandson of the outstanding traveler and writer Arkady Fiedler, who continues the travel traditions of his family;
  • Emilia Skirmuntt – Polish evolutionary virologist currently working on her PhD at the University of Oxford.

Among the people invited to the Festival were also foreign guests:

  • Russell Arnott – oceanographer and physicist;
  • Pete Kercher – founder of the European Institute for Design and Disability (EIDD);
  • David Price – head of Science Made Simple North;
  • Bernadette Murphy – an outstanding researcher of the life and work of Vincent van Gogh;
  • Leslie Kern – social and feminist activist;
  • Laurie Winkless – physicist and science writer publishing in Forbes magazine;
  • Prof. Antti Ahlava – Finnish designer;
  • Prof. Abraham (Avi) Loeb – astronomer and theoretical physicist from Harvard University, seeker of alien civilizations;
  • Prof. Robin Dunbar – an anthropologist and evolutionary psychologist at the University of Oxford, specialist in primate behavior.

Confirmed guests of the 5th edition of ŚFN KATOWICE also include:

  • Jolanta Wadowska-Król – a pediatrician who, against the socialist authorities, saved the health and life of children from the Szopienice district from the effects of lead in the 1970s, an honorary doctor of the University of Silesia in Katowice;
  • Andrzej Betlej, PhD, DLitt, Associate Professor of the Jagiellonian University in Kraków – director of the Wawel Royal Castle;
  • Ryszard „Galadhorn” Derdziński – traveler and Tolkienist, expert in Tolkien linguistics and researcher of the biography and philosophy of J.R.R. Tolkien, a graduate of the Faculty of Social Sciences of the University of Silesia in Katowice;
  • Aleksandra and Piotr Stanisławscy – authors of the largest Polish popular science blog “Crazy Nauka” (Crazy Science), double winners of the first edition of POP Science;
  • Dariusz Kulik – passenger planes pilot, creator of the YouTube channel “Turbulencja”;
  • Irena Polewczyk, PhD, DLitt, Associate Professor – a theoretician and practitioner in the field of speech therapy, she conducts research related to auditory perception and cooperates with architects and acoustics in the field of noise reduction in school buildings.

Some of the Festival ambassadors will also appear during the event.
