On 8 September 2026, the 3rd Scientific Conference of the World’s Top Scientists – TOP 2% – took place at the headquarters of the Polish Radio National Symphony Orchestra in Katowice. Fifty-nine researchers from 15 universities and institutes in Katowice and Silesia, who rank amongst the top 2% of the world’s most frequently cited researchers, registered for the conference. Not in Poland, not in Europe, but worldwide. The initiator and chair of the organising committee for this conference is Grzegorz Wojnar, PhD, DSc, Assoc. Prof. from the Silesian University of Technology. The conference was held under the honorary patronage of: Prof. Eng. Markek Pawełczyk, Rector of the Silesian University of Technology, Corresponding Member of the Polish Academy of Sciences (PAN), Marcin Krupa, PhD, President of Katowice, and the Katowice Branch of the Polish Academy of Sciences (PAN), chaired by Prof. Andrzej Więcek, MD, PhD, holder of an honorary doctorate degree.
The University of Silesia was represented by researchers from the Faculty of Science and Technology: Prof. Michał Baczyński from the Institute of Mathematics and the Institute of Computer Science, and from the Institute of Chemistry: Prof. Marzena Dzida, Prof. Monika Musiał, Tomasz Siudyga, PhD, Assoc. Prof. standing in for Prof. Jarosław Polański, and Prof. Grzegorz Zadora.
During the conference, Prof. Marzena Dzida delivered a paper entitled: ‘The role of acoustic, thermodynamic and thermal research in describing the functional properties of condensed phases’.
The TOP 2% ranking is compiled on the basis of established publication citation metrics in two categories: for the previous year and for the entire duration of a researcher’s career. This research was initiated in 2019 following an article in the journal PLOS Biology by authors from Stanford University, Elsevier and SciTech Strategies. A list of researchers from the University of Silesia featured in the prestigious Stanford Top 2% ranking.
