During the European Economic Congress, Marcin Krupa, PhD, the Mayor of Katowice, appointed the champions of the European City of Science 2024 (EMN). This title is awarded to those who act as programme ambassadors and represent the European City of Science in Poland and across Europe.
The title was awarded to Prof. Ryszard Koziołek, the Rector of the University of Silesia, and to Anna Budzanowska, PhD, the Deputy Minister of Science and Higher Education from 2019 to 2021 and a member of the think tank of the National Centre for Research and Development associated with the University of Silesia.
In December 2021, the city of Katowice was officially proclaimed the European City of Science for the year 2024. The consortium of institutions responsible for the efforts to award Katowice the title includes:
- Karol Szymanowski Academy of Music in Katowice,
- Academy of Fine Arts in Katowice,
- Jerzy Kukuczka Academy of Physical Education in Katowice,
- Silesian University of Technology,
- Medical University of Silesia in Katowice,
- University of Economics in Katowice,
- University of Silesia in Katowice (the leader),
- City of Katowice (strategic partner of the consortium)
