As part of the celebrations of the 160th anniversary of Katowice being granted city rights, the Mayor of Katowice Awards in the field of culture were presented. Among the winners was the Śląsk (Silesia) monthly, whose editor-in-chief is Prof. Marian Kisiel from the Faculty of Humanities at the University of Silesia.
The Śląsk monthly is a socio-cultural and literary magazine that has been published in Katowice since 1995. It is published by the Upper Silesian Literary Society in Katowice and the Silesian Library. Its main topics include historical, social, economic and cultural issues concerning Upper Silesia.
Prof. Marian Kisiel is a historian and literary critic, poet, translator, and member of the Literary Studies Committee of the Polish Academy of Sciences. His research interests include the history of literature as a science of literature, literary culture as a challenge to the sociology of reading, literary criticism as an autobiographical confession, émigré literature as a combination of programmes and ideological attitudes, and poetry as an experience. He is the author of several books, as well as the co-editor of dozens of collective volumes and articles in monographs and journals.
The Mayor of Katowice Awards in the field of culture have been presented since 1984 and are linked to the anniversary of Katowice obtaining city rights. The award is presented to artists associated with the capital of the Silesian Voivodeship and to people involved in promoting culture.
