On Friday, 14 March (3.14) 2025, the University of Silesia in Katowice celebrated the Pi Day for the nineteenth time.
14 March is an important date in the world of science and technology. It is also the birthday of such famous scientists as: Wacław Sierpiński – outstanding mathematician, one of the founders of the Polish school of mathematics, and Albert Einstein – theoretical physicist, Nobel Prize winner.
The 19th edition of USil Pi Day included many fascinating events that captured the attention of mathematics enthusiasts as well as others. The chemistry laboratories were a popular attraction, where one could experiment with chemical pyrotechnics, showcasing the beauty of science in practice. There was also no shortage of mathematical games and activities, which made science a real pleasure for participants of all ages. The math match provided a lot of excitement and proved how dynamic and exciting mathematics can be.
Another unforgettable event was the inaugural lecture by Prof. Michał Daszykowski, Vice-Rector for Finance of the University of Silesia, entitled ‘Chemical investigations in the dark world of food product counterfeiting’, which shed new light on the secrets of chemistry and its importance in our everyday lives, especially when it comes to food.
On this day, all campuses of the Faculty of Science and Technology celebrated Pi Day.
The events in Chorzów were a real treat for all science lovers. Participants could visit chemistry laboratories where experiments aroused curiosity and allowed all those interested to discover the magic of chemical reactions. Experiments in medical physics showed how science can help with diagnosis and treatment, whereas engaging games and activities proved that numbers can be a source of great entertainment.
The biggest novelty of this year’s celebrations was the scientific stand-up, which introduced participants to fascinating issues of science and technology in a light and humorous way. Science has never been so fun!
At the Sosnowiec campus, we discovered, among others, the secrets of biomedical engineering, materials engineering and mechatronics. Fans of 3D printing and scanning could learn about the applications of these technologies, for example in aviation and astronautics. They were also able to learn more about thermal imaging and its connection with machine learning in security and medicine. The Sosnowiec campus is a place full of engineers. There you could also learn about the power of the number Pi in precision design. The Mechatronics Student Research Group presented its best engineering projects, including a coffee machine and a tank.
The Faculty of Science and Technology of the University of Silesia involved several hundred people in this undertaking, including academic employees, students and student research groups. Science communication events like Pi Day are a bridge leading from complex scientific theories to understanding them. It is thanks to interactive shows, experiments and inspiring lectures that knowledge becomes accessible and fascinating!
Thanks to everyone who joined our numbers celebration! See you next year!
