The 31st FIDE Congress is just around the corner!

The most important event in the field of European Union law is fast approaching – the 31st Congress of the International Federation for European Law (FIDE), which is organised every two years, will be held in Poland for the first time!

Join us on 28–31 May – on the first day at the Faculty of Law and Administration of the University of Silesia in Katowice, and then at the International Congress Centre in Katowice, where representatives of academia and legal practice, judges of the Court of Justice of the European Union and representatives of other EU institutions will discuss European Union law.

The Congress programme covers three main themes of this year’s edition:

  1. EU emergency law,
  2. EU digital economy: general framework (DSA/DMA) and specialised regimes,
  3. Energy solidarity and security – from green transition to EU crisis management.

FIDE speakers include:

  • Anne Applebaum – Pulitzer Prize winner, historian, and journalist;
  • Claire Bazy Malaurie – President of the Venice Commission;
  • Adam Bodnar – Polish Minister of Justice;
  • Stephan Harbarth – President of the Federal Constitutional Court of Germany;
  • Koen Lenaerts – President of the Court of Justice of the European Union;
  • Michael McGrath – EU Commissioner for Democracy, Justice, the Rule of Law and Consumer Protection;
  • Sacha Prechal – former Judge at the Court of Justice of the European Union;
  • Marek Safjan – former Judge at the Court of Justice of the European Union, Chairman of the Private Law Codification Commission;
  • Silvana Sciarra – former President of the Italian Constitutional Court;
  • Eleanor Sharpston KC – former Advocate General of the Court of Justice of the European Union;
  • Adam Szłapka – Minister for European Affairs of the Republic of Poland;
  • Takis Tridimas – Director of the , Professor at the University of Luxembourg;
  • Joseph H.H. Weiler – Professor of European law, New York University;
  • Marc van der Woude – President of the Court of Justice of the European Union.

Young FIDE Seminar – the voice of young researchers

The FIDE Congress will also feature Young FIDE, a seminar aimed at young lawyers and researchers of European law, giving them the opportunity to present their work and discuss it with distinguished professors of EU law. Young FIDE will take place just before the start of the main FIDE Congress – on 28 May at the Faculty of Law and Administration of the University of Silesia in Katowice.

The Young FIDE programme includes:

  • inaugural lecture: ‘Young Wolves Should Be Eager To Make Their Mark: Some Ideas and Suggestions from an Older Wolf’ – Eleanor Sharpston KC,
  • thematic workshops and discussion panels,
  • the opportunity to network with experts and academics.

This year’s FIDE Congress is organised by the Polish Association of European Law (PSPE), the University of Silesia in Katowice and the City of Katowice. The Marshal’s Office of the Silesian Voivodeship is the regional host for the event.
