Rafał Milach, PhD, DLitt, Associate Professor of the University of Silesia won the main award of The Book Awards in the Author Book Award category at the 53rd edition of the photography festival Les Rencontres de la photographie in the French city of Arles for the photography book entitled Strike. The winners were announced on 5 July 2022.

Recontres d’Arles is the largest photography festival in the world. It was established in 1970 and over the years gained global recognition. The festival features over 40 exhibitions in remarkable locations in the urban space of Arles.

This year, The Book Awards received more than 700 entries from 34 countries – the jury selected only 78 works for the main competition. Awards were presented in three categories. The distinction received by Rafał Milach was granted for the best original modern photography project.

Strike is a visual account of the protests that began across Poland on 22 October 2020 and continued in various forms for the next few months.

The book was written thanks to financial support from the Institute of Film and Theatre Arts of the Krzysztof Kieślowski Film School at the University of Silesia.
