Centre for Materials and Drug Discovery

Research conducted by the Centre constitutes a comprehensive body of work in the area of design and synthesis of drugs and materials, which are of key importance to modern civilisation. The members of the Centre address the most pressing challenges for the economy, particularly in the field of environmental protection, combating climate change and the production of modern materials with a wide range of applications, including in the petroleum, pharmaceutical, chemical, energy and automotive industries, as well as in the area of utilising new sources and energy carriers. The research topics undertaken meet current and future expectations for the organisation of the energy system, including through research into energy storage, which is a worldwide problem in view of the increasing share of renewable energy sources in the energy balance of almost all countries in the world.

The Centre’s scope of activities includes research in exact and natural sciences, as well as engineering and technology (disciplines: chemical sciences, materials engineering). The leading research area is the development of the concept of green chemistry, which combines energy and material efficiency with minimal risk and high safety of chemical processes. The following research is carried out within this area:

  • search for new and highly active catalysts for the selective catalytic reduction of nitrogen oxides (SCR);
  • catalytic conversion of carbon dioxide towards commercially valuable chemical products, particularly in low-temperature methanation;
  • purification of industrial gases from pollutants;
  • production of materials and new technologies for energy storage technologies.
