On 14 October 2026, researchers from the University of Silesia took part in a panel discussion opening the European Forum for New Ideas in Sopot, entitled ‘Half a century of Research into Global Processes of Value Transformation – An Optimistic Outlook?’. The discussion was attended by Prof. Agnieszka Turska-Kawa, Vice-Rector for Research; Christian Welzel, PhD, Assoc. Prof. from the Faculty of Social Sciences, Vice-Chair of the World Values Survey association; and Prof. Radosław Markowski from the Polish Academy of Sciences and SWPS University.
During the discussion on global research into values, Prof. Agnieszka Turska-Kawa presented findings from studies conducted over the last 25 years regarding shifts in values within Polish society.
“Attachment to tradition and religion does not preclude a desire for autonomy or a need for security. Core values may distinguish us from one another, yet they can also coexist within each of us. When we speak of trust in institutions, are we truly referring to trust in the principles by which they operate, or rather to the people who lead them? To function effectively, we need stable institutions around us—institutions that provide a sense of security, regardless of our individual political preferences”, noted Prof. Agnieszka Turska-Kawa.
Prof. Christian Welzel presented research results from a global and European perspective:
“We are interested in how much countries around the world differ in terms of their moral compass—that is, what people believe and what they think deep down. We want to find out whether countries are drifting apart culturally and the world is becoming increasingly polarised, or whether globalisation is bringing cultures closer together and making them more similar”, said Prof. Christian Welzel.
The European Forum for New Ideas is one of the largest and most prestigious conferences in Central and Eastern Europe, focusing on global trends, the economy, and social challenges. Each year, it brings together prominent experts, business leaders, policymakers, and academics from across the globe.
