Dr. Joanna Korzekwa and Assoc. Prof. Władysław Skoneczny, Professor of the University of Silesia, have developed new methods for producing composite layers and double surface layers on substrates made of aluminium or its layers. Both inventions have been covered by patent protection.

Parts of machines, vehicles or devices made of aluminium or its alloys cannot be used as sliding components due to the low hardness and susceptibility to adhesive bonding in cooperation with metals. Due to this, it is necessary to develop layers that will protect parts designed in this manner. Properly composed layers have self-lubricating properties, increase the hardness of aluminium components, improve their anti-corrosion properties and thermal conductivity. Such modified materials could be successfully used as a structural element in systems where strong friction and wear of parts (such as slide bearings and guides) occurs.

Scientists from the Faculty of Science and Technology at the University of Silesia have developed two new, relatively simple and economically efficient methods allowing to obtain aluminium-based materials, which are mainly characterised by high wear resistance.
