“Cookies” are small text files sent by the website visited by the user. Such files are saved on the end device (e.g. computer, laptop, smartphone, tablet) that is used when browsing websites. A cookie file usually contains the name of the website that is visited, the validity period and a randomly generated unique number used to identify the browser from which the website is connected.
The following cookie files are used on the websites of the University of Silesia:
- session cookies remain on the user’s device until the user leaves the website or closes the software (web browser)
- persistent cookies remain on the user’s device for the time specified in the file parameters or until they are deleted by the user.
Most web browsers are set by default to accept cookies. However, these settings can always be changed by the user. It is possible to completely block the saving of cookies or block them partially. However, it should be remembered that blocking the saving of cookies may have a negative impact on the functioning of websites of the University of Silesia; in particular, user sessions on websites that require logging in will not be retained.
