On 6 October 2026, the University of Silesia hosted the first Gulf House expert seminar, dedicated to analysing relations and the potential for economic and political cooperation with the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) states.
The event was opened by Prof. Agnieszka Turska-Kawa, Vice-Rector for Research at the University of Silesia, who noted that the study of Poland’s relations with GCC countries was an area that had not previously been the subject of dedicated research at our University, making the work of Gulf House all the more significant. The Vice-Rector also congratulated the unit’s founder, Jakub Sławek, PhD, on gathering a group of distinguished experts representing academia, business, the media, and the diplomatic community. During the subsequent part of the meeting, it was emphasised that such cross-sector cooperation is essential for developing solutions capable of making a tangible impact on the development of relations between Poland and the GCC countries.
Krzysztof Płomiński, former Polish Ambassador to Iraq and Saudi Arabia, delivered opening remarks on the strategic importance of the Gulf region to Poland, while Rasha Al Joundy from the Dubai Public Policy Research Center was invited to give the keynote speech.
During the discussion on establishing cooperation principles between Polish stakeholders and GCC partners, attention was drawn to—among other issues—the lack of nationwide coordination of activities. The assembled experts shared the belief that such coordination would enhance the effectiveness of the undertaken initiatives. Participants also highlighted the potentially significant role of the University of Silesia, which could serve as a platform where distinguished experts and specialists on GCC affairs collaborate to devise a coherent cooperation plan between the Gulf region and Poland.
Prof. Joanna Dyduch, representing the Centre for International Studies and Development of the Jagiellonian University, pointed to GCC countries as a potential source of prospective students for Polish universities. According to the researcher, a sound strategy would involve interested academic institutions developing a joint educational offer.
The discussion culminated in a unanimous declaration of readiness to work on a joint action plan aimed at building strategic relations with GCC states and identifying key areas where Polish-Emirati cooperation would yield the greatest benefits.
Gulf House is an interdisciplinary expert unit focused on issues concerning the Arab states of the Persian Gulf; its activities include providing information, commentary, and analysis, as well as identifying opportunities for cooperation between Poland and the nations of the Gulf in the fields of investment, technology, science, and energy. At the same time, it aims to familiarise the Polish public with the realities of the region by fostering a deeper understanding of its culture, history, and society.
