On Monday, 8 May 2023, the Chair of the National Atomic Energy Agency, Andrzej Głowacki, appointed members of the Council for Nuclear Safety and Radiological Protection for a new term of office.
Prof. Janusz Janeczek from the Faculty of Natural Sciences, Rector of the University of Silesia in the years 2002-2008, was appointed for the third time the Chair of the Nuclear Safety and Radiological Protection Council at the National Atomic Energy Agency.
Prof. Janusz Janeczek is a geologist, specialist in the geological aspects of radioactive waste disposal, mineralogy of atmospheric dust and pegmatites. He headed the Department of Geochemistry, Mineralogy and Petrography of the University of Silesia, served as Vice-President of the Regional Conference of Rectors of Academic Universities, as well as Vice-Chair of the Conference of Rectors of Polish Universities, Chair of the Conference of Rectors of Silesian Universities and Chair of the Council of the National Science Centre. In 2016, he was awarded the ‘Pro Scientia et Arte’ university award.
The Council for Nuclear Safety and Radiological Protection is an advisory and consultative body attached to the Chair of the National Atomic Energy Agency. The tasks of the Council include issuing opinions on draft permits for the construction, commissioning, operation or decommissioning of nuclear facilities, as well as legal acts and organisational and technical recommendations developed by the Chair of the National Atomic Energy Agency. In addition, the Council may independently take initiatives to improve the activities of nuclear regulatory bodies.
