Egida Student Radio is entering a new phase of its activities. Starting 17 March 2025, the broadcasting station of the University of Silesia in Katowice is broadcasting in DAB+ technology on channel 10B (211.648 MHz). The signal will be broadcast from a transmitter located on the Altus building in Katowice, which will ensure wide reception coverage in the region.

The history of the Egida Student Radio dates back to 1969, when its activities began with a simple radio station operating in Student House No. 1 in Katowice-Ligota. The Radio has evolved over more than five decades, undergoing a succession of technological revolutions – from wire broadcasting to internet transmission to its debut on the digital waves.

The changes at the Egida Student Radio are one of the outcomes of the European City of Science Katowice 2024 celebrations. Last year, the radio station left its former premises in the Katowice-Ligota academic housing estate and moved to new premises in the spinPLACE – Centre for Creativity and  Coworking in the city centre (ul. Bankowa 5). A new Egida website has also been launched to coincide with the launch of DAB+ broadcasting.

‘This is a huge opportunity for our radio station and for students who are starting out in journalism. With DAB+ technology, not only will we gain better sound quality, but we will be able to reach a whole new audience. Rest assured, we don’t just deal with student issues! We often report on important events in our region. We are happy to continue the tradition in a modern form’ – emphasises Daniel Zimoch, Editor-in-Chief of the Egida Student Radio.

‘During the ECSK celebrations, the framework was modified, with Egida becoming the Radio of the European Science City. We have also applied for a broadcasting licence. Now Egida has excellent facilities and is more accessible to both listeners and those who want to try their hand at radio. For future and current students, this is an opportunity to acquire unique competences, which can be particularly important for those studying media and journalism-related subjects’, says Radosław Aksamit, Communications Director at the University of Silesia in Katowice.

The new form of broadcasting is not only more accessible but also serves as proof that student radio, despite the changing times, remains dynamic and open to new technologies. Broadcasts prepared by students at the University of Silesia will continue to provide listeners with fresh information, original content, and a unique atmosphere.

Radio Egida can now be enjoyed digitally on 211.648 MHz (channel 10B) as well as via traditional internet streaming. This proves that the spirit of the academic radio station is unchanged while moving with the times.

More information can be found on Radio Egida’s website (www.egida.us.edu.pl) and social media.
