Celebration of teaching at the University of Silesia in Katowice
The end of the year is a perfect time to sum up and celebrate successes.
On 17 December 2024, in the K. Lepszy Lecture Hall in the Rectorate building of the University of Silesia in Katowice, a ceremonial gala of the Teaching Celebration was held. The event was an opportunity to honour the outstanding teaching achievements of our academic employees and to congratulate the winners of competitions organised as part of the Motivational System in Academic Education.

Rector’s Distinctions
This competition recognised people who showed exceptional commitment to teaching, achieved particular successes in this area or introduced innovative solutions in the field of education. Awards were granted in four categories:
- work with doctoral school students,
- educational innovations,
- cooperation in teaching,
- outstanding academic employee.
The Rector’s Distinctions for excellent teaching in the academic year 2023/2024 were awarded to 79 laureates from ten units of the University of Silesia.
The decision to award distinctions is made by the Rector, based on the recommendations of the Competition Jury.

Co-thinking, cooperation (fast track)
The competition was addressed to mentors of student teams implementing scientific, didactic, social and artistic projects. Based on the applications, the competition committee selected 30 teams that had a chance to implement their ideas. The effects of their work were presented during the Silesian Science Festival.

‘Trends in academic education 2025’ – gala and lecture
During the ceremony, awards were presented to the laureates by: Prof. Ryszard Koziołek, Rector of the University of Silesia in Katowice as well as Katarzyna Trynda, PhD, Assoc. Prof., Vice-Rector for Student Affairs and Education and Marzena Będkowska-Obłąk, PhD, Plenipotentiary of the Rector for Education Quality and Accreditation – the heads of the competition juries.
The gala also included a lecture ‘Trends in academic education 2025’, delivered by Marcela Gruszczyk, PhD and Joanna Mercik, PhD.

We would like to congratulate all the winners and thank them for their contribution to improving the quality of education at the University of Silesia in Katowice. Their involvement is the foundation on which we build the future of academic teaching.
Both competitions were financed by the Minister of Science as part of the European City of Science Katowice 2024 (ECSK 2024) event, with a total budget of PLN 300,000.
