The procedure for granting the honorary doctorate degree was initiated by the request of the Rector of the University of Silesia in Katowice.

 

Doctor Jolanta Wadowska-Król – a paediatrician who during the 1970s launched research into exposure to lead among children living within the vicinity of the Szopienice smelter plant. Thanks to her actions, thousands of children were treated and the houses closest to the smelter’s chimney were demolished. These actions greatly improved local people’s health and had a positive impact on the state of the environment.
