Lawyer, practitioner of civil law, professor at the University of Bonn (1963-1967), full professor at the University of Vienna (from 1967). Regular member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences and The Göttingen Academy of Sciences. Foreign member of the Faculty of History and Philosophy of the Academy of Arts and Sciences in Krakow (from 1993). Publisher and editor of “Juristische Blätter” (“Dzienniki Prawnicze” in 1963–1989). Two-time winner of the Theodor Köerner Prize and the Cardinal Theodor Innitzer Prize. He received an honorary doctorate degree from the University of Salzburg (1986) and Munich (1991).
