The University of Silesia in Katowice received the first award in the research and development sector institution category and, as a specific distinction, the special prize of the Chairman of the Board of Metropolis GZM in Silesia Innovator 2020 competition for the most innovative solution in the territory of Metropolis GZM.

The solution awarded in the competition is the device for selective collection and storage of gaseous phase, which will be used in research on volatile organic compounds found in exhaled air, especially for the purpose of early diagnostics of interstitial changes in lungs through analysis of the composition of bronchoalveolar fractions of exhaled air in patients cured from ARDS or with suspected chronic interstitial respiratory diseases.  The device has been covered by legal protection – the relevant patent application was submitted to the Patent Office of the Republic of Poland. Moreover, the design of the device is protected in the European Union through registration as an industrial design in the European Union Office for Intellectual Property. The device has been developed by scientists from the University of Silesia, Jerzy Kukuczka Academy of Physical Education and Medical University of Silesia. The authors of the solution include:

  • representatives of the University of Silesia: Assoc. Prof. Andrzej S. Swinarew, Professor of the University of Silesia, Jadwiga Gabor, Klaudia Kubik, MSc Eng., Mateusz Przybyła, MSc Eng.,
  • representatives of Medical University of Silesia: Dr Szymon Skoczyński, Dr Ewa Trejnowska, Prof. Adam Barczyk, Prof. Grzegorz Brożek, Dr Jarosław Paluch, Dr Ewa Sozańska and Dr Marzena Trzaska-Sobczak,
  • representatives of Jerzy Kukuczka Academy of Physical Education: Assoc. Prof. Arkadiusz Condition, Professor of the Jerzy Kukuczka Academy of Physical Education.

Last year, the University of Silesia received a distinction in the Silesian Innovator 2019 competition in the research and development sector institution category. The appreciated invention back then was developed by Prof. Andrzej Swinarew’s team – two-way mouthpiece for storing the breathing phase with background material.

The Silesian Innovator competition is organised by the Upper Silesian Agency for Entrepreneurship and Development as part of the ‘Enterprise Europe Network’ project.  The project is addressed e.g. to Silesian entrepreneurs and scientists who develop and implement new technological solutions, which not only contribute to the improvement of the quality of human life and health, but also enhance the image of the Śląskie Voivodeship.
